But when I do, entering my login id and password, it has no effect - it still keeps asking me to login. And then, if I come back up to the first page of the site, it's restored my login.
The other browser, Web, doesn't have this problem and everything works fine, albeit very slowly.

Not sure if this would help, but I have had better experience with the Firefox ESR ever since I created a Firefox account. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fir...count-data
Even if you don't sync all your devices, (it was a bit much to have on my phone all the same bookmarks across the devices!) the web-surfing experience seem much more stable.
