Received my Z-Wave chip & Enclosure - Surely I'm doing something wrong here...
#1
So today, after waiting what seems forever, finally arrives my Z-Wave (US) Module and PINE64 Enclosure.  Originally I backed the PINE A64+ IoT Package (2GB), and finally got my board in early July, and mid-Sept I got the rest of my order.  I was backer 13,893.

So imagine my excitement thinking I could finally, after waiting almost a year, play with OpenHAB and finally set up, after waiting 6+ months, the Z-Wave gear that I had recently bought (deadbolts, thermostat, motion sensors, etc -- ~$500 in Z-Wave gear).

Here is my thought progression..

What I received:

Logic says they go together like this:

This is how it fits on the PINE64 board, right?

Cool, now let's put the FINISHED board into my fancy new case:

Wait...will the top fit on?  This module sticks up pretty high..

Hmm...yeah, that's not going to work:

So please, help me.  Did I install this incorrectly?  Without seeing any instructions I can only assume I did this all correctly.

Beyond that, are my assumptions correct that the latest Pine OpenHAB build is still 20160415?  That means that the new Z-Wave module isn't even supported?  Maybe I should just trash this Z-Wave module (that doesn't even appear to fit) and use my Z-Stick with Home Assistant or something...

I like to think I've been pretty patient with all this, but I'm starting to get upset by this whole adventure.  I thought by now I would have a plug-and-play OpenHAB box with Z-Wave, Wifi, and Bluetooth support.  The Pine board is pretty nice and runs great with DietPi, and this case seems very solid and would fit nicely on the shelf on my server rack.  But I guess I'll have to put up with a big Z-stick sticking out of it.  Hmm, maybe I'll just ditch this whole project and put the PINE in my storage tote next to my Pi B+ and my oDroid XU4 and put the Z-Stick in a rack-mount piece of gear.  Bleh, what a mess.

The Z-Wave module is nicely supported, see https://twitter.com/kaikreuzer/status/76...1590433792.
I have created a new SD card image which has the module pre-configured. This is currently waiting for the Pine guys to upload it to the wiki.

I'm glad to hear that!  Without the wiki being updated, I had no idea that there was support with the new module.

While I have you, is this module supported in OpenHAB via Open Z-Wave, or some other middleware(?).  My current plan is to move forward with Home Assistant with my Aeon Lab Z-Stick gen5, but I'd rather use the PINE Z-Wave module.  Would the Z-Wave module show up as a device in /dev, or does it work differently than a USB device would?

my suggestion would be , since you have thus far done a great job of keeping together, hang in there awhile longer. do not start beating up on yourself. as you say, you have been pretty patient with all this. avoid being upset with it all. give yourself a break and continue patiently hanging with it until it eventually plays out. good luck maybe you can still get what you wanted from it all along. many of us have been down similar paths. btw, great photo journal/how to!

Yes, unfortunately, you did it correctly!  Dodgy

Due to a manufacturer changes (Sigma Designs no longer selling the ZWave chip to Mistsumi), the pine64 guys had to go with the adapter board version of the z-wave module, as to go with their original planned module which plugged into the Euler buss instead has a lead time of 16 weeks, so would have set shipments back another four months due to the changes. You can see the discussion and some similar comments in this thread.

I would think you have three options if you want to use the ABS case: 1) put a hole in it (not very pretty, but effective!),  2) if the module would fit if both boards were pressed together, you could get rid of the connectors and use through-hole headers... with both boards pressed together, as it looks to be a direct match between the upper and lower board connections, and 3) (perhaps the simplest and easiest) make/use a ribbon cable to connect the z-wave module to the rpi plate adapter, and velcro/tape the zwave module to the inside of the lid of the ABS case.

btw, you may find it it handy to drill some small holes (paper-clip wire sized) in the sides of the case before you close it, where the release catches latch, so you can easily open the case again later by simply inserting the paperclip (or other) wire and pressing the latches in to release them.

Thanks Kai for your work. Could you also prepare a step-by-step guide to reproduce your work if we want start from a newest Linux version and not not to wait for a new openhab image? For instance, I would like to see if that is possible to have a version without an "headless build" but with the hdmi output enabled (DVI would be nice but doesn't seem to work). In your test, did you have trouble with Ethernet port? For the time being I am using WIFI and not Ethernet because it seems working better...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've decided just to forego the zwave module for now, and continue using my Z-Stick. Likewise, I've moved to using DietPi with Home Assistant, instead of OpenHAB, and HA has been working great so far on the Pine. I will wait for the official solution from Pine regarding the module, which I'm guessing will end up being a ribbon cable since that would be the easiest/cheapest option. Not as pretty, but oh well.

This is a fantastic tip. I've had to remove the lid 3 times so far, and I feel I am going to break one of the clips any time now. Next time I open it, I will drill some small holes like this.

Thanks again all.

Thanks for documenting this, tycoonbob. I'm in the same boat and definitely frustrated.

Is there a plan to offer a real fix for this?

@kai, sorry my bad, I will update today.

[update] new beta4 build that support ZWave already uploaded to Pine64 wiki page.

Also received my enclosure and the Z-Wave module and was asking myself exactly the same questions you did. I'm glad I'm not the only one then ;-)

As I don't absolutely need the Z-Wave module, I think I'll stick with the case for now. But I have to say that I'm also disappointed. I even had problems opening the thing in the first place! Thanks for the tip about the drilling, will also look into that.
