Is it possible to do UART / system messages only thru a 5V 2A male to mini usb male cable? Can I do serial if I power the board thru the USB on the same USB cable. Thanks

Not sure what circuitry you are willing/able to fabricate, but the mini USB connector on the Pine64 is strictly for power purposes. It has no path to the processor or any other onboard systems.
