Got it to work! Although, lsusb still reports nothing, I can now use the powered hub, the smartcard reader (with gpg), and the USB keyboard.

Steps under PostmarketOS / SXMO:
  1. Flashed the ANX firmware using method 1.
  2. Just to make sure everything is properly reinitialized, I shut down the phone, took out the battery, put it back in, and started the phone again.
