You can run anything from batteries if you work the problem enough. 240AC-only appliance? Get a big enough 12-48v battery and inverter combo. DC appliances? Get a big enough switching regulator (fixed or adjustable).
In the case of the rockpro64, I'm running mine from a solar charged 12v solar setup, and to give it a stable 12v supply it's running from a step up / setup down regulator that ensures that regardless of if the input voltage is above or below the 12v the rockpro64 needs, it gets the stable 12v it needs. And since it's a 10A supply, it should be able to power the 12v side of a 3.5" hard drive or two.
