Update: I figured out that the issue I describe above was due to installing the Weekly build of Mobian (phosh) on the eMMC. The Weekly build of Mobian (phosh) boots up properly when installed on a sd card. I successfully installed Mobian 12 (bookworm) on the eMMC, but could not figure out how to upgrade to trixie. I could not find instructions how to upgrade that worked. I could not get past repository not signed error message after modifying the two sources files. I did not want to stick with Mobian 12 (bookworm) because the audio issues are annoying and it is uncertain whether I would be able to upgrade to trixie. I might do a fresh install if Mobian is released with a fully working installer to the eMMC.
Note: I do have to say that the PPP with towboot is pretty slick. Installing a new OS and booting from an sd card are quite easy and very handy.
I ended up installing PostmarketOS (phosh) stable on my pinephonepro, which is working (audio calls) so far.
