Advise needed, which OS / applications to use?
#1
Hi to all,

I have a Pine64 Rockpro64, 4GB version.

I want to run it as a NAS with the following applications, have the following functionality:

• Opensource software
• DDNS IP-update (gandi)
• Letsencrypt SSL Certificate / Acme.sh
• SSH
• Antivirus
• NZB Download / SABnzbd / nzbget
• Ubiquiti Unifi Controller
• Oscam server
• SBC System Monitoring
• PI-Hole
• Domoticz
• Daily / Weekly Backup to a Synology NAS
• Nextcloud, for hosting documents and photo’s / movies, or alternative?

For the security, do I need to run something like Fail2Ban as Nextcloud for example is connected to the Internet?

I see a lott of OS’s for the Pine64 Rockpro64 but most of them are old and not held up to date as it seems?
Which OS to run that have major and security updates and is held actual up to date?

Where to start?

To Docker or not to docker?
Eats docker memory and system resources as that is limited on a SBC?

Now I am running Ayufan’s 0.10.9: gitlab-ci-linux-build-180 - 8 April 2020
https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-b...tag/0.10.9

But having major problems with Nextcloud: https://help.nextcloud.com/t/nc-20-0-2-o...php/100292
It’s running directly besides OMV 5, not inside docker

If you can live without binary packages for now (until 13.0 is released) FreeBSD 13-CURRENT works well in general (don't bother with 12.X) however there's no video support (not important if you're using it as headless server), you can't use the A72 cores (automatically disabled due to stability issues using both clusters at the same time) and Pi-Hole isn't available from your list. Given that it's still in development binary packages for arm64 is being worked on and not available at this time of writing. It does however involve some knowledge about editing files and on how compilation works in general so it's not your Ubuntu experience. You probably want to recompile a SNAPSHOT and disable debugging as it will slow down performance quite a bit. That being said, pretty much everything else is usually well documented, handled within the ports framework and works just as it would on an amd64/x86 box and there are tools in the ports collection to keep everything up to date.

I diizzy,

i'm a user, not a codewriter or compiler....

Looking for a stable image, installing by CLI is not a problem

Beautiful hardware but it depends on software hobbyiests?

You are looking at fairly "new" hardware and writing drivers etc takes time. Unless you're looking at distro targeted towards NAS etc you will need to do a little bit of work on your own irregardless.

new hardware?
received the hardware 12 months ago

from what I see here:

https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/ROCKPr...re_Release

there is no main OS that has a daily build and maintained images for the Rockpro64

I see only hobbyiest images from Q4 2018 til Q1 2020, also on this Pine64 Rockpro64 subforum there are no up to date images from main OS streamings

Maybe I suspected too much from Pine64 hardware and the OpenSource community?
Or I don't look for the correct places?

I guess Manjaro might be an option given your expectations however it's not really targeted for headless usage.

I have no idea if packages for all your requirements are available however

what's wrong with my expectations for normal device support by a major OS?
