Pinewatch ?

Pinebook, Pinephone, not a Pinewatch ?

I'd gladly invest in an "open" smartwatch that might resemble the excellent NO.1 D5, simple design and great value.

Any plan ?

Perhaps some day, but it is not planned at this time.

I would also like to have a privacy friendly watch/tracker(activity/fitness). Most current "commercial" offerings depend in ientrentservices from teh supplier (like Fitbit). This is horrible during holidays/offline (and for privacy).
A tracker that only comunicates via bluetooth in an openway to a opensource application is desirable. (openway in the sence of an open source protocol, not open so the data can be observed by outsiders).
It would be nice to tinkle with tracker data and see what the community can come up with (without bigbrother reusing our data).

So a watch containing a heartrate and "step" / activity sensor whould be interesting.

Please plan it, and call it the "wrist - pinephone" with ...
- Lignux
- SIM,
- 5G (it will not be soon)
- Signal - or similar - to replace Whatsapp
- voice to text for texting and as interface instead of keyboards,
- integrated microphone and speakers as the actual hands free for phones
- Internal USB-c with optional small USB SDDs - better than SD cards -
- Privacy fitness and running Lignux apps

- A more expensive model with camera for video conference with signal or similar, for selfies and some picture

I think most smartwatch models failed because of they had to be connected to a Smartphone

Even using some cheap old model Lignux compatible to sell it rebranded as the wrist - pinephone - a real smart watch as it is a wrist computer - would be great.

Most of the time most people do not need a 6" inch screen and device, plus running, swimming, or even walking on the street phone calls or signal texts are better for this kind of device that I think failed because of the lack of easy "speech to text" for messaging apps

The NO.D5 (D5+ or now D7) are full featured smartphones with just a round 1.3 screen. No need to link to a phone as you can fit a nano SIM inside and make phone calls with it. Plus its a full android version, not android wear. The big downsize (pun intended) is the battery longevity as 500 mAh is barely enough if you want to use it a bit more steadily than just a "watch".

Anyway, if you plan to explore that option, I opt in.

@Kochise , I would take a look at watchX as tinkerers wearable for the moment. Given the time and motivation, you could make some very interesting things with it

Battery life is a problem - especially when the biggest part of what a watch should do is to first and foremost tell the time. Getting displays to be always-on and energy efficient is hard as hell. Pebble got it right back then (I won't lie the TickWatch Pro has caught my eye though I'm considering even the Sony Talkband SWR30 for affordable solution)

The Garmin smartwatches are feature rich when compared to the competition at getting the basics down - for the smarts the other companies can take their cake. It's worth a look what they have to offer

As 1st gen Android Wear owner, my point of view is that cramming lots of functionality is useless for such devices. Not because it won't be cool or there won't be enough performance, it's entirely due to the size limits as of how we - people, can interact and perceive information from such small devices. It's cluncky to say the least...
How badly Google and the OEMs miscalculated with Wear, is a rant for another time (or the Wear app searching for updates... Why Google? WHY?!)

As for speech-to-text, I'm always baffled why no one just added the short voice recordings instead?  Huh Why cram additional hardware for AI and NPU module to analyze the speech when a small audio recording would suffice and give better results? I guess it has something to do with the "SMS is still a thing" crowd - the same one that is overzelously protecting iMessage Dodgy

Sorry, I'm straying way off topic here as I'm very opinionated when it comes to wearables and how they shouldn't be abused with the same disregard for longevity like smartphones. Especially by going for more features that will be underutilized because of biomechanics (we - big, smartwatches - tiny). Most smartphones can at least be repurposed

Either way, pick your battles with smartwatches/fitness trackers wisely - you won't win many of them for the foreseable future Smile

I've tried large watch models of about 2" wide like https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1932546081.html or https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32597029206.html which are far more usable with a larger screen and are spacey enough for a larger battery as well.
However it starts to weight a bit and takes more space on the wrist. But it's a matter of habit I guess. Anyway, unless we've get a direct link with our brain, we've got no other choice to interact with eye, finger and voice.

Have you looked into AsteroidOS? I've got it running on an LG G Watch and I'm quite happy with it.
