Crashes when using a 4to External HDD

Hello, i'm using a PineA64+ with 2gb ram, with Android 5.1.

I tried to plug my Lacie 2d 4to External HDD (USB3 but support USB2).

i previously formatted it in Fat32 from DiskUtility on Mac.

But when i plug the external hdd, it's seen by the Pine a64 but after approximately 5 to 10 secondes, the mini computer crashes (automatically  reboot)

Did anyone succeed with pluging an external hdd, or a large external hdd ?

How can i find logs or something to resolve this issue ?

you might need to increase current supplied to pine64. try a different power supply with more amps.

You need an external HDD with external power supply, the startup current of a mechanical HDD is too much for most SBCs....

i think the lacie d2 has external power. is it an ssd?. but question i have is there supposed to be software on pine64 sd card prior to attach unit?

It has an external power supply.

And i also tried different usb power supply for the pine a64.

It's not SSD (4to ssd would be great though !)

Hi I have connected a 2TB USB drive to my Pine64. via a USB hub with external power supply to be able to drive the USB HD. The USB outputs at the Pine64 is limited to less than 500mA and this is in most cases not sufficient to drive a USB HD.
My power supply to my Pine media center is a 5V 4A PSU. I do not use the micro USB plug but the power pins at the Euler bus connector.

I tried one external HDD once with external powersupply and it worked, several USB sticks as well...

does the drive support android? looks like it may be windows/mac and does the 5.1 support OTG on pine64? and i thought fat32 limited to 32gb. that would be 125 32gb partitions on 4tb drive?

FAT32 supports a maximum of 2 TB for a sector size of 512 bytes and 16 TB for a sector size of 4,096 bytes (although this microsoft knowledge base article naturally contradicts this by saying that the maximum disk size is 8TB...

It's only Windows 2000 onwards that restricted fat32 to 32GB, and then only in the gui... you can format larger drives as fat32 from the command line format tool. Part of their push for the fancy new NTFS file system. 

And why the questions about OTG? The pine64 has two normal USB2 sockets on it... it doesn't need to have USB OTG via a microUSB adapter!

There is a *possibility* that the extra connectors on the USB3 lead are being shorted when plugged into the pine64, which is causing the shutdown (since your drive is externally powered so load on the pine64's power management chip / power supply isn't an issue). It looks like you would be able to use a normal USB2 USB A to B lead on it.. maybe that is worth a try?

I just tried an externally powered Seagate Expansion Drive (4TB USB3) with a NTFS file system and didn't have any issues. If you issue a 'dmesg | tail' command immediately after connecting the drive... what do you get? I was able to mount, see the contents of and u(n)mount the drive without any issues.

i was under the impression that usb host was needed as well as the usbmicro to standard usb hardware. there are devices with the usbmicro which do not support OTG. so i guess my question was does pine64 android 5.1 have support for usb host. so even with the standard usb slot i would guess that android usb host is needed, it's not entirely unreasonable to ask imo
