I am using postmarketOS Phosh on the PinePhone.
Firefox is incapable of playing 720p video, even with the Firefox ESR hardware accelerration settings enabled.
Sometimes it completely lags for seconds, sometimes only a little bit, when UI (video controls/Phosh UI) is shown.
Needless to say, it gets very hot.
VLC can not even play a video.
What do you recommend for playing 720p video properly?
I don't know if hardware acceleration is REALLY used (even if enabled in FF), perhaps there is still some GPU driver support missing for it...?
Anyway, I don't think it is possible at the moment to view 720p videos in a browser on the original PinePhone without performance problems.
I think the hardware is just too slow for this?
I'm using Mobian and only view videos in 360p or 480p, 720p just won't work.
(But I'm ok with that for now, on such a small display I don't really need 720p that bad...)
But IF hardware accelartion is still NOT used in general at the moment, situation could change of course.
Using encrypted Mobian (bookworm) on pmOS CE Convergence PinePhone (3GB/32GB) as Daily Driver, and Beta Edition Convergence PinePhone (3GB/32GB) with encrypted Mobian (bookworm) as Backup device.

No, it isn't. You can check it in about:support -> Graphics -> Compositing: it says "WebRender (Software)". With hardware acceleration in use it would say "WebRender".

Yes, I use also VLC. 720p in VLC works better than in Firefox, but still not 100% lag free on my PInePhone (non-Pro).
