I have tested the phone as the factory requested and they are having me ship the phone back for repair possibly a wiring issue.  Thanks for all the input

I found some that may work, on walmart . com of all places   . I've removed the speaker and noticed a nice gouge in the foil like cone part. When they arrive and I get one installed I'll post the result here.

UPDATE: The batch of 4 speakers arrived and they were ~0.6mm taller than oem. I installed one anyway and it fits ok.. the very very slight bulge (only noticeable to me ) now in the location of the speaker can be avoided by increasing the opening size on the back plastic frame that holds the speaker down thus allowing it to protrude (but then would need to be glued in place or something).

The speakers arrived with wire leads potted in and I soldered them to the large pads on the flexible pcb under the speaker.  Where the oem speaker springs made contact.

I removed the adhesive film on the bottom of the speaker magnet so it would contact the large pad directly under it (like the oem speaker did).

The result was a success. The new speaker cranks and my pinephone sounds almost less terrible than when new!  

Also my first job with the Pinecil and it performed perfectly.

Unfortunately, as is common with mods in pretty much all online forums, some overzealous mod here closed that thread (and I, myself, was a mod in a very popular video and audio compression forum for many years, so I know the benefits of NOT wielding mod powers without good cause).

I'm sure plenty of Pinephone users with speaker problems will land on the older thread. However, after a couple of hours of speaker research, I consider the issue of obtaining a replacement speaker to be far from closed and, accordingly, I believe that the thread referenced by the wiki should not have been closed.

I have not been entirely happy with the replacement speakers that PB users have reported to work in these forums. They either use wires (must be soldered) or the spring contacts don't appear to be of the exact same PP OEM design, or the thickness/height of the speaker is not exactly 3mm, so I began my search for other replacement speaker source.

I found an N91 speaker on Ebay from Germany but it lacked technical documentation and I'd prefer to use a USA-based source too. I've very happy with Mouser Electronics purchases in the past and it looks like they have a new CUI Devices speaker available that should work in the PP.

In fact, Mouser has a number of 15 mm x 11 mm CUI Devices speakers. They are available in 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm heights/thicknesses. If I assume that 3.0 mm is the precise and correct dimension for a PP, this speaker should be the optimum PP replacement:

A Mouser search reveals many others but, for some reason, the spring mount selections do not appear in a Mouser search. I had to use duckduckgo to find the spring contacts version ("S" designator in the CUI part number) of the 3 mm speaker. Here are some other selections but keep in mind that "L" in the CUI part number is a wire connection and "SP" denotes a solder pad. (See the downloadable CUI .pdf datasheets for details):

Has anyone seen a link to a datasheet, vendor part number or mechanical drawing or CAD model for the actual PP speaker? I've already taken my inner-frame apart couple of times and I don't really want to remove it unnecessarily again in order to measure the speaker until I have a speaker in hand. I know the PP wiki says the speaker is 15 mm x 11 mm x 3 mm, but that "spec" doesn't have enough significant digits when spring finger contact pressure is at risk! Is it really 3.0 mm in height?

The alleged N91 speaker replacement from Aliexpress (linked above in this thread) is listed as 3.5 mm tall and its spring contacts are not quite the same design as the OEM speaker in my PP.

No, it does not include the speaker, only the contact pads for the speaker are on it. The speaker is a separate part seated in the frame and apparently cannot be bought as a spare part from Pine64.

What you're probably looking at is the vibration motor. As @kqlnut points out, the speaker is a separate part and is not available from Pine64.

Yes--I can confirm this, Zebulon Walton. I have a spare USB-C side board. It came with the vibrator but not the speaker. The board contains the contact foil for the speaker, which is obviously also an EMF shield foil.

I could take my phone apart again to compare the speaker and contacts against the CUI solid model (BTW, FreeCAD works well, if you don't have other solid model or .stl mesh model software installed that can measure arbitrary dimensions in a model) but for only $2.5 USD  each, I think I'll just order both the 3 mm and 3.5 mm speakers, see which one is a match, and report back to this thread. Besides the effort involved, taking these phones apart multiple times degrades the mechanical fit and soundness of multiple components.

Note the "3" vs. "35" in the manufacturer's part number to denote height/thickness and the "S" to denote spring contacts.

My speaker buzzing has been getting progressively worse since the phone was new and I'm hoping this will correct it.
