PCIe SSD drive still not working ?? - dr_ju_ju - 08-07-2018

Sorry if I'm being totally stupid and posted in wrong area, but...

I've just received a new production unit (Rockpro64 V2.1 2018-06-06) together with a PCIe 3.0 x4 to M.2 (NGFF) SSD Adaptor, to which I've added a WD blue SSD M.2 2280 drive.

I'm using Ayufan's latest builds, both minimal & full, but nothing I try allows access to the drive.

The boot logging shows an error connecting to the PCIe device(s), but I'm not sure what is going on (sorry but I'm unable to upload file).

The drive I've tested in a normal PC & can create\format partitions etc...

Reading other posts on the site, relate to a resistor that needs to be removed ?  but I was under the impression that the board I purchased was one of the new 'fixed' ones, so should work ok ??

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received....

You're clear after reading the IRC log, that your device is a SATA interface SSD in an M2 form factor, not an M2 NVME drive, right?

You can either get an NVME drive or much more cheaply get the SATA adapter in the store.

Is that the correct date\time ? as I see nothing starting @ 11:09, unless I'm being totally thick today, as usual..

In short - WD Blue are SATA interface and will not work on the M2 PCIe adapter from Pine64.

The ROCKPro64 supports NVMe drives via the M2 PCIe adapter - if you stick to WD you need Black.

M2 SATA drives have a Key B (as well as M), NVMe have Key M only.

(Or you could try find a PCIe adapter like mine - I havent tried any SATA on this card yet Smile )

Blush My bad & yes being stupid, for not checking specs properly

I have an NVMe drive, but plugged in the SATA one instead and ploughed on regardless

I'm also going to try a dual sata interface card, as I need lots of storage for a travelling Astrophotography control & imaging system, and the less I have to rely on USB connected storage the better...

Hello,

I am new to pine64. Just bought ROCKPro64 and waiting for shipment. In the meantime I have a question: do you think it will work with this PCIe to M.2 adapter:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/H1111Z-Add-On-Cards-PCIE-to-M2-M-2-Adapter-SATA-M-2-SSD-PCIE-Adapter/32955160990.html

and this SSD drive (not NVMe):
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Kingsuxing-ssd-m2-ssd-120gb-sata-m2-1tb-SSD-240GB-2242-Internal-solid-state-drive-SSD/32912046435.html

I want this because this SSD is still cheaper than NVMe (I know it is also slower). Is this possible or I must go with NVMe?

Thanks.

If you plan to use the above combination, you need to have a n USB-Sata adapter and feedback the Sata connection to the adapter board. The above PCIe adapter don't have onboard PCIe to Sata circuit, it just have the m.2 connector that passive link to SATA connector.
