Well I gave up on ayufan's latest stable image and tried the latest armbian from their website
https://www.armbian.com/pine64/

and tada
wifi module/adaptor is connecting and working fine (although not with the groovy NM applet)

I thought it would be debian stretch under the hood but it's xenial! so all the better. FYI armbian is using xcfe and not mate which is ok.
It even works find with the LCD (by editing the armbianEnv.txt file in /boot
