Pinebook Pro vs Pinetab2 - Lotech - 02-13-2024
Hi there,
I'm new here, and I've some background on Linux, Debian in particular, but I'm not a programmer but I still dare to try something special. I would like to know how the Pinebook Pro compares to the Pinetab2 in general use ? what is/are working/not working ?

I don't have a PineTab 2 to compare with, but I can probably guess that debian isn't well supported on it either. I have tried to install debian a few different times on my PineBook Pro over the course of time and have not had success, though I heard that if it was pre-installed it tends to work. The best use experience I have found is with TowBoot on SPI and Manjaro on eMMC, though this isn't perfect either.
The use case for a laptop and a tablet are not the same, and if you really want/need a touchscreen, get the PineTab 2. I prefer to move my monitor to any angle and move it around without a stand holding it in place, so laptop form is far better for me.

the PBP definitely has better (and actual) Debian support (https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/Pinebook_Pro_Software_Releases#Debian), it also has the benefit of time and more developers on its side, so there is far more developed support for its hardware. Though, it does seem that for Debain to run right, you will want to install TowBoot to the SPI first.
The PT2 has been steadily chugging along with its development (understandable hurdles slow it down, such as fewer developers and several supplied drivers that need rewritten) but if you're not worried about BT w/o using a dongle and no working cameras yet, it works wonderfully! Concerning Debian, it does not currently have official Debian support, like the PBP, instead it has a port called Mobian available. However, installing Mobian has a few more hoops to jump through for installation vs Arch on the PT2 or Debian on the PBP (https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/PINE64/PineTab2)

I have no problem with Debian on the Pinebook Pro. It works well. I prefer it over Manjaru. I do not have Tow-boot installed, and U-Boot is on the eMMC. Mind you, I installed Debian years ago, maybe it requires Tow-boot now.
