Have you tried adding 'XKB_DEFAULT_MODEL=ppkb' to the bottom of ~/.profile to activate the top row symbols. Reboot, or re-read ~/.profile w/
>source ~./profile.

Then you'll need to choose a key to use w/ F-keys for FN symbols...

Settings > Keyboard > Special Character Entry > Alternate Characters Key

To disable the virtual keyboard...

Settings > Accessibility > Screen keyboard

This doesn't stick between boots, but it's not much trouble, and the
advantaqe is that you don't have to remember to re-reactivate it before
taking the fon out of the keyboard and finding you don't have any input.

Ironically, you can't type in underscore '_' in the XKB_DEFAULT_MODEL. So I will edit the file on my Mac and then transfer it back Wink
