PinePhone CE and USB-C Video Out - Rockimo - 06-13-2020

I had recently seen the video by megi tweeted by pine64 of the pinephone displaying on a monitor, but there was no mention of the phone having a hardware mod.
https://twitter.com/thepine64/status/1271198037726109696

Later I discovered on the wiki page that there was a hardware quirk that was discovered after the production of the CE version.
https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php?title=PinePhone_v1.2

A workaround is to desolder to switches.
https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php?title=PinePhone_v1.1_-_Braveheart#USB-C_CC_pins_are_pulled_to_the_GND_by_AW3512_.28VCONN_switches.29_when_VCONN_is_off
https://xnux.eu/devices/pine64-pinephone.html

But apparently this causes another issue when using a USB-C hub: "SD card reader not enumerating on PP with removed VCONN switches"
https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PinePhone_Hardware_Accessory_Compatibility

So I have a couple of questions. I ordered my pinephone on may 21 with DHL shipping. I have not yet received DHL notification e-mail.
Do the shipped pinephones all have this hardware quirk?
Should I cancel my order and wait for a new pinephone revision?
Will there even be another revision?

I would really like to know, because I was really looking forward to this feature and cannot afford to buy more than one pinephone.

RE: PinePhone CE and USB-C Video Out - wibble - 06-13-2020

The docs say the quirk was discovered after the CE production had started, so versions .10, 1.1 (BH) and 1.2 (CE) appear to have it. That covers all Pinephones produces do far, at least as far as we outsiders know. I would expect there to be another production run at some point with a revised main board to fix this and any other problems discovered in the meantime. How long this will take is anyone's guess. It's worth keeping in mind that the parts of the phone, including main board, have been made available for order as spare parts once the phones have shipped, so a fix will cost less than a whole new phone. If you're not prepared to live with hardware quirks/bugs like this then you're probably better to wait for them to be fixed in another revision or two.

If you decide you don't want it because of this issue 1. would you be willing to sell? and 2. if so are you located in the US? If not no big deal just figured I'd throw the idea out. It never hurts to ask  Smile

RE: PinePhone CE and USB-C Video Out - Rockimo - 06-14-2020

I'm not in the US and I think I'm gonna keep the phone because I need a new one anyway. As wibble suggested I'm just gonna order new parts once there is a new revision.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm in the same boat as OP -- didn't realize the drivers needed for video out weren't already in the kernel, and now the hardware issue, and I'm primarily interested in convergence. As it is I've barely used it. It's a BH device and I'm in Utah. If you're interested I'd be happy to let it go at cost and I'll pick up the shipping since it's technically used.

Thanks for the offer but someone already sold me one. Thanks for the offer anyway.

This hardware bug is not really a big deal; it just prevents automatic detection of the USB state as discussed in another thread:
https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=10255. As a workaround, you will have to switch the USB state manually in software and it should work.

That's great, I can live with that.

RE: PinePhone CE and USB-C Video Out - heng - 06-17-2020

What software do I use to switch the USB state?

Not much, it's not possible to workaround this in software. ANX firmware malfunctions if CC pins don't behave as expected, and there's no way to communicate with the dock to enable alt-dp mode. There's no manual override.
