I'm thinking of this in terms of a desktop linux installation where, after installing whatever flavor of linux you wanted to install, you could then apt-get install a variety of front ends like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, and so on...

...is there an easy way from the terminal to download and install phosh or ? without the whole download a new install, put it on the SD card, and wipe the phone?

I don't think so.[0] At this time, I suspect it may be easier right now to purchase some additional SD cards. And/or, try out that multi-boot image?
