I managed to get an install of Android 9 http://files.pine64.org/os/ROCKPro64/and...8GB.img.gz
using Balena Etcher to write the file to SD.

I also erased the SPI Flash with the "erase" file at https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-u...f9f19116f1

Installing Armbian was much easier, using the "UBoot" at above address.]]> It was a lengthy process as the dd commands given in the pine forums repeatedly did not work.

1. It looks like the latest image for Android 9, SD card is from 2019. Have there been no updates since then? Or has support dropped off?

2. Is there any reason to choose an older version (7, 8)?

It looks like I have to do some work to install the Playstore, whichever version I use. I don't normally use Android but there are a few apps I would like to try. I might be able to set something up with a Linux distribution but it would probably be a lot more work than installing a couple of apps.]]>

I've tried several images (I'm booting from the SD card) but none give any output on the hdmi port.  I noticed the images say for 7" LCD is this why? If so how can I modify the image or code to output to the hdmi port?  Also if there's a link for the Android 9 source used on the PRO do anyone have a link.

Just dd it to SD card and it runs. It is Android 7.x based, but it already contains Play Store and apps like Kodi, RetroArch, etc. 
Wifi does not work, unfortunatelly. Anyway, it is not so important for a TV box, I think.
I am just testing it on SD card, tomorrow I want to flash it to eMMC and use it instead of my old Rockbox, which is already very slow.]]>

Without running it and clicking on Speaker Toggle there is no audio from audio jack. It seems that the headphones/line out cable is not detected.

So, how do I enable line out by default after boot? Now I have to run that Speaker Toggle after each boot when I want to use line out.

there must be some asound/alsa config some somewhere, but I was unable to find it.

download arm64 pico gapps, extract and convert with attached script:
# cd open_gapps...
# ../gapps2tar.sh


Now install gapps
# adb push gapps.tar /sdcard/
# adb root
# adb remount
# adb shell :

Code:
tar -xvf /sdcard/gapps.tar -C /
rm /sdcard/gapps.tar
rm -rf /system/priv-app/PackageInstaller /data/system/package_cache/1/PackageInstaller-16 /data/dalvik-cache /cache/dalvik-cache
reboot

After Reboot
  • add all perms to google packages in system app config.
  • disable androidsetup if crashing.
Have fun.

I get a CRC error when extrating the android 9 SDK. MD5sum fits the one from the website. 
Even gzrecover can't help. Is it really broken or some incompatibility (Debian Buster)?
