Pinebook Pro Temps? 65C while playing music via youtube w nothing but a static image - jazzmans - 05-24-2020 I just installed debian bullseye t'other day, with the 5.5 kernel and I love it, mostly. One thing that surprised me, and concerns me, is cpu temps. While playing music on youtube with a static image, (no moving graphics), and reading one of my forums, I saw temps hitting 67C. That's absurdelly hot, Even my big Nvidia cards don't see temps like that. Now, ambient temp is 80f, no sunlight, and the body of the pinebook is scalding hot. I pulled out my marble dough making board, and put the pinebook on top of it on the rubber stand-offs, not much temp change. When I moved the pinebook pro so that half of the rubber washers are hanging over the side, (thus the magnesium case is directly touching the marble) temps drop to a much more reasonable 42-55C. Is this normal? I don't remember temps like this with the stock debian oldstable the pinebook came with. htop shows 1.97, 2.6, 3.70 for load averages, most of it is firefox. I'm looking at temperatures with gkrellm and inxi -Fix. the other temperature sensor (whatever it is) only reads 18C. https://youtu.be/nsArbdB_XUY Is what I'm listening to, as you can see, it's just a single static image, I am using a USB DAC, HiFimeDIY Audio SA9023 USB Audio type: USB because the stock soundcard and speakers, well, frankly, blow. Using an external DAC is so much better, it's worth lugging around, especially since I don't have to lug around a power supply. Laptop is plugged in, at the moment. TIA, for any information, suggestions. RE: Pinebook Pro Temps? 65C while playing music via youtube w nothing but a static image - Dendrocalamus64 - 05-24-2020 Code: $ youtube-dl --list-formats https://youtu.be/nsArbdB_XUY It's not a static image. It's a video stream consisting of a long series of frames of the same image, and the video codec isn't smart enough to recognize that. Depending on the player size, you were still playing back 1080p video for, I guess, a long time. At 80F ambient, and, unlike the big Nvidia cards, the Pinebook doesn't have a fan. Workaround is to install youtube-dl, grab your choice of the audio-only formats (150 or 251), and play it back with an efficient audio file player, not Firefox. Like 5-10 minutes. any suggestions? It does work, but spends most of its time doing nothing. I use it on other machines, and there's no lag at all. it's not like its doing anything, htop shows nothing, and iotop shows nothing. Again, it does work, just exceedingly slowly. RE: Pinebook Pro Temps? 65C while playing music via youtube w nothing but a static image - Dendrocalamus64 - 05-25-2020 It doesn't delay on my PBP. There are a lot of debug options listed in the man page, try adding --verbose --print-traffic to see where it's getting hung up? RE: Pinebook Pro Temps? 65C while playing music via youtube w nothing but a static image - xmixahlx - 05-26-2020 set youtube video to the lowest resolution. your best bet is youtube for kodi right now. kodi supports mpeg2, vp8, vp9, h264 (8 and 10bit), and h265 (8 and 10 bit) hardware media decoding. when we have vaapi support for hantro and rkvdec, then hwaccel will work on youtube etc. on firefox+wayland and chrome+vaapi patch. RE: Pinebook Pro Temps? 65C while playing music via youtube w nothing but a static image - goda90 - 06-05-2020 There are a number of Firefox extensions that disable the video portion of Youtube videos. Maybe those would help. |
