Dumb question: do I have to use pmbootstrap? - quixote - 02-13-2020

I downloaded and extracted
PHP Code:
pine-pinephone-20200210-phosh.img
from here: https://images.postmarketos.org/pinephone/

What I was hoping to do was just use Etcher to flash it to an sdcard and put that in the phone. Is that impossible?

If I have to use pmbootstrap, do I do that after Etcher has already put it on the sdcard? On the phone itself? If the latter, does a command line come up while it's booting?? I'm not getting how this works. Blush

Hang on. Just found this youtube howto on Rob Braxman's page.

The similar one for Ubuntu Touch was helpful.  I'll see how I go.

Edited to add: Nope. Mainly the ubuntu install. Doesn't answer the pmbootstrap questions.

It occurred to me that the worst thing that could happen if just using Etcher didn't work was that it wouldn't boot. I'm fairly used to that by now Big Grin

So I did that, and of course it booted off the sd card. W00T!

That is one really nice OS. Much better discoverability than ubports, which is important to me because I don't know what I'm doing.

Sees the SIM without any problems or backchat. And does SMS/text messages both sending and receiving! (Ubports was ignoring my SIM.) What more does anyone need? Big Grin

Does wifi works on the image you downloaded? I installed via pmbootstrap and I can connect to my wifi but it doesn't really work.

I'm actually trying to use wifi right now. As you say, it says it's on and working. Haven't figured out yet whether I can actually do anything. (I'm trying to get signal/axolotl installed. All my friends are on Signal, so I want wifi more than mobile!)

Please keep it on-topic pepole.

Just to clarify: no pmbootstrap is not needed if you a pre-built iamge. Just use any image flashing tool (both Etcher as mentioned and the good 'ol dd will work).
