Heat build-up: EG25 or SOC? - CloudHackIX - 02-11-2020
After the first hour or so of playing w/ different OS images, the exposed RF-shield (under the battery cover) gets quite hot. I'm was pretty sure this shield only covered the EG25, so flipped the modem kill-switch to off. It's still getting quite hot... so I've got two questions (one of which I can probably answer from the schematics):
1) Does the RF-shield act as a heat-sink for both the modem *and* the SOC?
2) What does the modem kill-switch actually do to the modem? Place in reset? Physically remove power?
EDIT: Took a me a bit to realize that the symbol for the killswitches is split through-out. SW1-A is the 2-pins for the modem kill-switch, and looks like it is intended to cut power at the Q1500 power mosfet. Has anyone confirmed that the EG25 does not draw unwanted power when disabled?

Same problem here.
The shield gets about 50 degrees C hot, when phone is idle (as in WiFi and 4G not connected to anything)
and screen is off.
Tested with PMOS - it uses around 300mA in this situation - and that gives us less than 10h battery time.
I'll try to nuke all the kill switches, to see if that changes anything.

I have other EC-25 chips in other devices (routers). They all run a bit hot. I added metal heat sinks to all of them to cool them down. A one by two inch square works pretty good, the bigger the better. Not ideal to have to add but maybe necessary

A lot of it is the current software. I put PostmarketOS on mine, but with XFCE and for the most part it runs very cool, even while playing an MP3. The same configuration but with Phosh or Plasma Mobile causes the phone to overheat and lock up. I think the mobile software just needs some work since it's very new.

My confusion is that it seems as though the kill switch should be preventing the EG25 from receiving power... so either it's failing to do so, or the shield is also radiating heat from the SoC.

Just installed latest pmOS to emmc and removed the sdcard: much less heat now unless I'm actively toying around with the gui. Could be either due to updated kernel, or due to no longer having rootfs on sdio?
