nVME crashes system - mamboman777 - 01-15-2020

I'm having issues using my nVME drive with my pinebook pro.  Any time I do any sort of major read or write the entire system freezes.  I have attempted the power reduction settings listed in the wiki, however, the state is not saveable and does not fix the issue.  I'm using a Samsung 970 500gb.  Any help would be appreciated; I'm at a loss.

What's its current power setting?

The pinebook pro is running off of battery.  the default nvme power setting is 0.  I have attempted to set it to 0, 1, and 2 to see if the result changes, but I almost always end up with a crash.  I did have one successful benchmark this morning set at 2, but I have not been able to duplicate it.

Do you recall the operating power consumption from those 3 options? Maybe the draw is too high?

Sorry, but how to check and update the NVMe power setting? I have not heard about it yet.

Here you go: https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/Pinebook_Pro#Post_NVMe_install_power_limiting

You may need to install nvme-cli first.

@mamboman777, The Wiki instructions were updated to show the "-s" option for saving the settings.

There is at least 1 NVMe that does not allow "-s". If your NVMe is like that, a startup script might be in order.

I think it would be helpful to list "first, install nvme-cli" in the wiki.  It took me a while to figure that out.

0 - 6.2w operational
1 - 4.3w operational
2 - 2.1w operational
3 - .04w non-operational
4 - .005w non-operational

I attempted to put the scripts from the wiki into the startup applications but it did not change the state on startup.  I also put the scripts in /etc/rc.local and that did not change the scripts on reboot.  Is there another way to accomplish this?

Also, part of the problem is even after the state is changed, the system crashes anytime a large read or write is attempted.

That number might be 2, now, but I can't recall the other drive that wouldn't accept saving. Tried on my Sabrent Rocket Nano last night, and it wouldn't accept the -s flag, either.

Good point, just added "The package 'nvme-cli' is required to run these commands." to the section.

Have you checked for any firmware updates to the drive, from Samsung? Also, does it feel like it's running hot at all? It might also be useful to know what firmware version it's currently using. (I'm seeing several issues in the Arch forums with this drive, though they do vary.)

I have not checked for firmware updates.  From what I have read, the firmware update is an iso that you boot into.  Is that safe to run on a pinebook pro using the microSD?  It does not feel hot.  The battery life dropped, but not what I would consider drastic.  It went from approx. 8hours estimated to approx. 6 hours estimated.

what is the process for figuring out the firmware that the nvme is running?
