Incompatible NVMe SSD - Silicon Power P34A60 - gandlers - 01-07-2020

Not sure if there is an Incompatible SSD list, but if there is this one doesnt work:

I bought the 256GB variant, it doesnt show up at all in DMESG and GParted fails to locate it. nvme list returns no NVMe drives conencted.

I've installed it in a USB3 caddy which proves the SSD isnt faulty and it connects as /dev/sda.
I know the NVMe adapter and the PBP are ok as I threw money at the problem and purchased a Toshiba OCZ RC100 240GB (on the Wiki as a confirmed working SSD) which is working fine.

So if nayone is thinking of a Silicon Power A60 NVMe SSD, don't it doesnt work in the PBP.

Any idea why it doesn't work?

I couldn't find any power specs on that page.

I was curious and tried to track down xases where it was being used on a linux system,  and didn't find any.  I wonder whether there is a problem with the rockchip_pcie driver or pcie drivers in general.  Since it is a dramless device, if I understand the specs correctly  it seems that power would not be an issue,  but I do wonder about timing.

Also from the specs on the referenced page:
  • System Requirement
  • Computer with M.2 slots supporting PCIe interface and one of the following operating systems: Windows 8.1 or Windows 10

Sorry I have no idea why it didnt work.
No apparent difference to DMESG output after a boot with it installed and one without.
My linux knowledge is basic to say the least so I have no idea what the problem could be.

Regardless, whether you know why, SSD failures can go here:
