New NVMe SSD not seen by OSes - tophneal - 12-24-2019

Purchased one of these recently and finally got it today. Found plenty of good reviews, but only one with power usage information, and it looks like it should be perfect for the PBP and its power restrictions. Installed it without any issues (great thing that it's a shorter one, I didn't want to cut the board.) However, now that I'm booted back into Manjaro (or Chromium) I can't even see that the drive is there. I'm going to try reinstalling the hardware, but I was curious and thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced a similar issue. Has anyone's NVMe drive given you issues being made available for formatting/partitioning?

So far neither Gnome Disks or Gparted shows the drive, and I don't see it within /dev/, Chromium doesn't show the drive at all either.

Never will work, sorry. Return it if you can. From the product title, you bought a SATA type M.2 SSD;

Quote:MyDigitalSSD Super Boot 2 (SB2) 42mm (2242) SATA III (6G) M.2 NGFF SSD Solid State Drive (512GB (480GB))

The NVMe adapter in our Pinebook Pros only supports PCIe type, (& NVMe). Ideally a M.2 with M key only would be used, (4 x PCIe lanes for maximum speed). Here is the description;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_factors_and_keying

But, both B & M key PCIe NVMe SSDs can be used, as long as you understand the SATA & USB part won't work in a Pinebook Pro.

Thanks for pointing that out! Can't believe I missed that. That's what I get, thinking I found my unicorn.

I'm still figuring out the NVMe interface (thank you for that link, btw), but in my searches I'm only finding drives matching the required specs that are 80mm. Is this the standard for NVMe PCIe?

If we can find them, using shorter drives would certainly help avoid the trackpad interference. I'm not having any issues, while typing this, and the incorrect drive is still inside. Has anyone found any that are 60 or 42mm?

I am assume others have tried the 2242 size. with the nvme adapter issues that would make sense...

@tophneal, yes, 80mm are the most common length. Followed by 42mm, then 100mm.

Western Digital does make a M.2 NVMe line that has the same capacities in 30mm, 42mm & 80mm lengths.
These also have published power specifications, (reasonably good), unlike other brands.

Western Digital has another M.2 NMVe line, (only in 80mm lengths though), with good power specifications;

What do you think about this drive ?

@Arwen , thanks for the link to that WD line. All the stores have wanted to push the WD Blacks on me, so these are new to me.

Thank for all chiming in and sharing links!

I had checked out the Toshiba, after it was confirmed to work, but couldn't find the capacity I wanted. I'll wait another week or so and try again.

I have certainly run across the Sabrent SSDs, but couldn't locate enough information about their power consumption/usage.

Check this out: MyDigitalSSD SBXe 42mm (2242-D3-B+M) M.2 PCIe 3.1 x2 NVMe SSD  .  I have the 2280 version  (480)   It is very power efficient , runs reasonably well  (not as fast as the Samsungs, i.e)  and is really inexpensive.   Look at the specs on their web site.  Perhaps you just accidently bought the wrong model before.

I am running with the drive as my file system, booting  off of the emmc,  and find that it will boot when the battery is very low--down to 4% at least.   I did have to aattack the adapter with a hacksaw...:-) for the 2280

Thanks for tip on the right model! I’ll check it out.

@as400, The problem I see is that the power usage does not seem to be publically available. I tried, but like @tophneal could not find power specifications.

Sure. Those of us wanting more internal storage seem to be stuck at the moment.

In someways I'd pay more than $100 to get a 256GB eMMC drive just to put some of the storage requirements behind me.
