Sms apps and signal messenger - boggle - 12-06-2019

What OS's on the pinephone will allow sms messages? And what app would be use for that?

Better yet, is there anyway to use signal messenger for sms as well? Currently the desktop Linux version of signal is only for communication to other signal users using mms. Would an android like implementation work, where signal can also send sms messages?

For sms it's likely to be pretty much all or nothing as it looks like they're all using ofono as intermediary between app and modem. Once support for the Quectel modem is in ofono the apps should work...in theory.

I'm running Debian on my PinePhone. I guess if I try to set up Signal, the easiest would be to port the Debian desktop version to ARM64. It wouldn't have all the same features as regular Signal though and would rely on pairing it with an existing install. That would be a fun project.

For now I look to other things like Matrix.org as solutions

Signal for pinefon is 'signal-desktop_6.11.0_arm64.deb' at Gitlab.  Requires
Signal on your android.

Note:  This is not the current version (requires registering) but it'll get you there.
Signal for the desktop doesn't work so well on the small pinefon screen.

SMS is supported on basically every distribution.

Plasma Mobile uses Spacebar, Phosh uses Chatty, other environments have their own SMS app.

Hello

Silence, a fork of Signal, still supports SMS as far as I remember. It works under Android and you can use it with an Android emulator on a Pinephone under GNU Linux.

axolotl, which is native signal client for linux based phones, not android. axolot has reached 2.0.4 version. however, i haven't tested it, i use signal-cli.
