Volumio on Rock64 - gkkpch - 10-29-2017

Hi,

Due to lots of other activities I have not been able to work on Rock64 changes as much as I hoped.
Therefore it has taken far longer than anticipated, but here it is.
I'm pleased to publish a link to the first Volumio dev image for Rock64.
Volumio 2.299 for Rock64

This image will boot from eMMC and uSD out-of-the-box.
Support for the Rock64 DAC board is included, SPDIF and DAC are both working.
Limitations are:
- it is WIP and therefore a dev version, no opportunity to update to a newer release (reflash will be necessary)
- not all audio formats are working, due to current kernel driver/codec constraints

I'm convinced Rock64 has great potential.
Note: you can purchase a 1Gb Rock64 board version, it will be enough to run Volumio comfortably.

Please report any issues here.

ok, thanks. i was unaware of that reference and the link above in 1st post is an immediate download. btw, the software build works well using the browser on my laptop. next question is has anyone used the DAC from the pine64 store?
https://www.pine64.org/?product=rock64-stereo-audio-dac-add-on-board
if you have used volumio with the rock64/pine64 DAC combo i would like to hear what your experience is [or, was] .
i took a look at the volumio store & forum. not much discussion specific to pine64. maybe that changes now that the various parts required are more widely available. i have not had experience with sbc DAC units but i get the idea that the various DAC units work better with certain sbc units than others. does anyone using pine64 sbc boards have recommendations for a DAC unit that works well with pine64 boards? thanks.

Just tried it out with the DAC from the store - works perfectly. Another solid application for the 1GB board.

and audio experience will even get better. What we have right now is the driver with the changes @Kwiboo added. Hopefully we will get support for higher resolutions too.
The DAC from the shop does work fine and if anyone still has an i2s PI2 DAC lying about (not relying on i2c), it probably works too.
Feedback on USB DAC usage is also very welcome!

RE: Volumio on Rock64 - ktulu909 - 12-05-2017

I would assume that I can flash the image to EMMC same method as android using windows 10 and android tool?

RE: Volumio on Rock64 - gkkpch - 12-05-2017

yes, the initial version supports automatic detection of emmc or sd as the boot device.

I have been attempting to install volumio using androidtool and unfortunately it isn't allowing me to load the firmware. Is there a step by step to load to EMMC using windows 10?
