Stock Debian build - Luke - 08-11-2017

The good news is that the stock debian build is actually pretty darn solid  - in some respects, if you intend to run a desktop, this is probably the best desktop build on Rock64's launch (I found it to have the least desktop-related issues).

There is one major issue I found with the image -- updating via terminal breaks the installation. This will obviously get fixed, but its something you may wish to keep in mind when trying out this image at launch Smile

Did you test out the Xenial image? That was what I was gonna use in a desktop environment with a UHD TV. Currently using my notebook which only supports UHD at 30hz (hdmi 1.4).

Also do you know how well Debian UI scales? I'm know some Linux things but I would consider myself a beginner still

RE: Stock Debian build - Luke - 08-11-2017

I tested various iterations of the ubuntu image over the past few months. I found the armfh version to be faster in the desktop every time I tried it. There were still some issues with the image wrt desktop - something is not right while using composition and performance using browsers is terrible. None of these issues are present on the debian build.
Its all early days of development - it will get sorted.

As for scaling. The funny thing is, it scales quite well on 4k60hz using android (havent tested Linux on TV), but for some off reason running Linux on my 4K 144hz monitor it runs at 1080p@120hz.

You have a 4k 144hz monitor? Those must cost a fortune

RE: Stock Debian build - Jakr - 08-11-2017

I made the mistake of trying the 64 bit version on Xenial Mate first. ... I should have known better, but wanted to try.

I am on the 32 bit Xenial Mate right now. I have been trying the 64 bit version, not stable at all .. so far this one seem ok .. if it keeps up, will keep it, I think.

I did like the Debian image .. I just personally perfer Mate, to xfce .. but I know, that is personal prefrence. I will say, it seemed pretty stable,to me, so far.

I tried the Android img today .. not sure what happened .... First I got a big circle, saying .. erasing, for several minutes [nice way to boot in to a new os, lol .. then it just went to a large version of the word Android, and stayed like that .. till I gave up, and unplgged the rock 64].

I like mate better too. In fact, I like ubuntu more than debian. But this post was just intended to give people a heads up that updating the image breaks it for some reason :Smile NB. you can just install mate on the debian img if you are os agnostic.
