Video noise on new Pinebook - chrisb - 08-03-2017

After booting my newly delivered Pinebook up for the first time today, I noticed quite a bit of noise on the display. There seem to be randomly flashing pixels on the display that are most noticeable against a blue background. I'd almost describe it as sort of sparkle or shimmer effect. I tried to capture the effect on video which was a bit tricky. I searched a bit and didn't seem to find any other topic with this issue. They appear to be flashing randomly, it doesn't seem like it is the same set of pixels repeatedly. Any ideas for how I might try to fix this? Thanks much!

Out of curiosity, could you paste uname -a please ?

You will find the update scripts for the kernel, uboot and packages in /usr/local/sbin I recommend updating to latest release version.

RE: Video noise on new Pinebook - chrisb - 08-03-2017

Running uname -a outputs
Linux pinebook 3.10.105-bsp-1.2-ayufan-59 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 13 12:39:31 UTC 2017 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

After running the 3 update scripts on the Github page you linked (and rebooting after each one), uname now gives me

Linux pinebook 3.10.105-bsp-1.2-ayufan-77 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jul 9 12:09:30 UTC 2017 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

I still see the same video artifacts though. If I CTRL-ALT-F1 to a terminal, I can see them there as well. I can't tell if it's just my eyes, but I seem to only see them when the background color is blue. They're not at all apparent on a black background. Thanks for such a quick response!

I will help you troubleshoot and potentially file a support ticket (if need be) - I see that you are online, think you could join the IRC ?

Sure, I've logged into IRC as ChrisB. Thanks!

RE: Video noise on new Pinebook - chrisb - 08-04-2017

I haven't gotten a fix yet. I tried upgrading to 0.6.2 and downgrading to 0.5.5 without any change. I also tried reseating the flatflex for the display without any success. Luke helped me out in IRC the other day, and I ended up opening a trouble ticket.

RE: Video noise on new Pinebook - hene - 08-10-2017

I have this same problem but it seems to get worse when plugged in to the charger. So most likely there is some noise in the power circuits. Quick test with oscilloscope would most likely show how much noise there is. Few extra caps on the power lines could fix it.

I trust that you've read this and updated to the most recent release version of ubuntu ?
