Please, please, please do PoE - bill - 12-12-2015

I sent this to the kickstarter email as well but please consider doing this with POE.  this box would be perfect for a bunch of wired network connected stuff and the ability to power them from the ethernet switches without individual power supplies would be fantastic (and something that the Pi guys have not done)

PoE is not that hard to do and would save people who have powered switches a lot of headache running both Cat5/6 wires and the little USB dongles to power the thing.

Use TL-PoE10R or the like. You just need different cables between PoE splitter and device since the Pine guys chose unfortunately micro USB for DC-IN (otherwise this is good news since the device can never exceed 2A current since micro USB is rated 1.8A max and since most USB cables are crappy you'll run in undervoltage/undercurrent situations even earlier and the AXP803 will do a hard power-off)

Still an extra $20 box to go along with each Pine.    But admittedly one less cable  to run.    Does anyone make a barrel connector to USB cable?

RE: Please, please, please do PoE - tllim - 12-13-2015

Since there are a lot of requests on PoE connection, I am looking into spinning a 2G board with PoE capability (this also means power withdraw directly from PoE cable and eliminate micro USB power connector). Please note that this version will not release during Kickstarter campaign time and may available around April or May 2016 timeframe.

Please let me know what type of application that you needs the PoE version. The information will allow me to correctly design this board.

I would better think about providing 'el cheapo' PoE (neither compliant to IEEE 802.af nor IEEE 802.3at) to every Pine64 that features 100 Mbits/sec Ethernet only. There you have 2 cable pairs that can be used to provide 5V/GND on 4 unused cables. All you then need is something like this

http://www.i4wifi.eu/EU-230V-powering-1/8-port-passive-POE-injector-panel.html
http://www.i4wifi.eu/EU-230V-powering-1/16-port-pasiv-POE-injector-panel.html

And then everyone can save the $2 for a passive PoE splitter: http://www.i4wifi.eu/EU-230V-powering-1/Passive-PoE-splitter.html

Simply route 2 traces from Ethernet jack to AXP803 and you're already done.

I don't like this method. If somebody unaware of this arrangement and plug in 48V, the whole board will be toast. Prefer to implement in "right" way.

I would better read the specs and think about how 'Resistive Power Directory' works. Thanks.

for me it's using the board as a PBX running FreePBX for my PoE powered VOIP phones

The PoE switch is already in, it powers my phones so I can then just plug the Pine in and off we go. (or I can put the Pine almost anywhere that has a hard line back to the switch)

Noted and thanks.

RE: Please, please, please do PoE - Groupers - 12-22-2015

The splitter for passive PoE would work if the board had a DC jack, but limit it to 100 Mbps. A cheap add-on board for real PoE would be ideal if there's no chance it'll be added to the PINE 64.
