First of all, there is a chance that not all remotes will just work. The remote that the pine64 was optimised for transmits IR codes using the NEC protocol, so remotes for devices like sony products may not work (and didn't for the one I tried)... Sony use their own protocol just to be different!
If you have attached an IR receiver into the IR socket, on debian, you can use the evtest command. It's not installed by default, you'll need to run "sudo apt-get install evtest" first to install it. Then, when you run it as sudo like below, you'll want to enter the number for the "sunxi_ir_recv" device... which is number 4 on my system. You'll then get a long list of events that the device supports (all the different buttons), and a prompt saying "Testing ... (interrupt to exit)". At this point, you can press a few buttons on your test remote, and see the the pine64 responds. I pressed the 1 - 9 keys on a NEC-IR-complaint remote I use for for my lighting system, and each button was detected. Once you have events being triggered, it's just a matter of setting up some sort of handler to monitor for those events, and respond accordingly.

RE: Other Remotes ?? - Learnincurve - 01-23-2017
I'd like to use a Logitech Harmony remote, which interacts with all my other devices. Does anyone know of a suitable NEC protocol mapping in the Harmony database?
