Long dialpad keypress to retrieve voicemail - Zebulon Walton - 08-15-2025

AT&T has made some unwelcome (at least to me) changes to its basic voicemail service. Now the simplest way to check voicemail from one's phone is to hold down the "1" key on the dialpad to issue a long tone. However this does not work on the Pinephone, at least not running Mobian Bookworm+Phosh.

It is not clear whether this long tone triggers something proprietary in a phone provided by AT&T or whether just sending the tone out over the phone network is sufficient. (It does work if I put my SIM back in the flip phone AT&T sent me when 3G service was discontinued in the U.S. but I did that just for test purposes, I don't want to actually use that stupid Google-infested thing.)

Anyone know if this can be made to work on the Pinephone? I can still retrieve voicemail by dialing my own number so am not dead in the water but it's necessary to enter a security code each time which is a bit of a PITA.)

I'm also running mobian bookworm Phosh on my PP, but it doesn't have a SIM. But it can make SIP calls. However, I can't bring up the dialpad after starting or answering a SIP call.

My Librem 5 running Byzantium Phosh has an active SIM and it sends a short tone for dialpad tap. A long press does nothing until release, when it sends a short tone. (This is during a call to a landline on spreaker, so I hear what comes from the L5.)

I suspect the Phosh dialpad sends fixed length (short) tones and only afer release.

I doubt the long press on that flip phone really sends a long dialtone, I rather think it is actually a speed dial feature dialing some preset number.

Good point! Maybe I can fire up the flip phone again and see if the number is in the call history. The call-in number that worked previously, which I had programmed into the Pinephone, no longer works. (I hate when crap that's worked for ages suddenly is trashed without notice!)

EDIT: That worked, I was able to pull the voicemail phone number from the flip phone call log. (Should have thought of that myself but have been frazzled from dealing with AT&T support most of the afternoon.) The bad news is that when using that number it still asks for the security code which was not necessary in the past. Oh well, I may be looking to jump to another carrier anyway due to other recent changes that AT&T has made...
