PinePhone earpiece too quiet - Waffelo - 12-30-2024

I got my PinePhone and I have been trying to call with people, but it seems like the earpiece is just too quiet and low quality because I cannot understand a lot of what the person at the other end says and also it sometimes sounds like those low bitrate chinese toy phones. I don't know if this is an issue with my distro or hardware but it is pretty annoying. I use ArchLinux with Phosh, I found the image from the official Pine64 software releases page.

In my pinephone regular with mobian-phosh, stock firmware, earpiece sounds OK. But on the other pinephone with almost-free firmware Biktorgj (version 0.8.0) soud is very quiet, for me the only drawback of this firmware.

i may give more specific instructions later.

install alsa-mixer, usually from package "alsa-utils".

command alsamixer in console, tab to select capture, press s to select sound card. select pinephone sound card.

set input volumes to correct levels. there might be multiple options but, probably boost mic1 boost and aif1 ad0. put it somewhere in middle. (in pp pro, they are called different but similar).

press alt-0 or esc to leave program.

Do not set Mic1 Boost to anything non-zero. If it is already set to a non-zero value, set it to 0. It will not affect your earpiece volume at all (it is only for the microphone), but the other end will not be able to understand any darn thing with Mic1 Boost set to 100, and intermediate values have intermediate levels of sound degradation, 0 is best. See https://forum.manjaro.org/t/original-pinephone-and-mic-1-boost-alsa-setting/153873.

What you can do if the earpiece is too quiet for you is to set the volume above 100% in PulseAudio. It can be set to up to 150%. At least Plasma Mobile makes that available through the UI. In Phosh, you may have to use a CLI or a third-party GUI tool like pavucontrol, not sure.
