Ethical sourcing practices - x.c12 - 07-30-2024

Hello, I'm considering purchasing a PinePhone and I am interested in understanding the ethical aspects of its production. Could anyone provide information on whether Pine64 has ensured that materials used in the PinePhone are sourced without the involvement of forced labor or inhumane practices?

Pine64 doesn’t make any particular effort to, no.

There’s Fairphone, of course, and I believe it’s part of SHIFT’s focus as well.

I’ve actually looked into this myself when I was thinking about getting a PinePhone. From what I’ve seen, Pine64 is pretty open about their manufacturing process, but they don’t really have full-on certifications like Fairtrade or anything. They seem to work with smaller manufacturers, which could mean slightly better working conditions, but there’s no way to guarantee that the materials are sourced without forced labor. If ethical sourcing is a big priority for you, it might be worth shooting them an email directly or checking their forums for any updates from the community.
