Under bookworm, the keyboard icon appears at the bottom right of the screen when you activate an application with which you can use it, but under trixie the keyboard icon doesn't appear.
What configuration needs to be activated for the keyboard icon to appear at the bottom right of the screen?

There is no configuration. This is Phosh, it follows the GNOME design philosophy, which basically says no options, ever.
As I understand it, you are supposed to hold the finger on the bottom bar for a while until the keyboard pops up. Do not ask me who thought such an undiscoverable feature was good design.
(What they did in Phosh 0.36.0 is that they added an option… allowing you to configure for how long you have to hold the finger until the keyboard pops up! No kidding.)

Ah, Gnome. The devs should get out more and see how their great ideas work for people with a fine motor co-ordination deficit. Touch screens generally give me a lot of grief. I must get on with sorting out a script to let me rotate the XFCE desktop and touch screen as XFCE works much better for me than Phosh (or any other "touch screen optimised" GUI that I have used so far).
I have sort of discovered this feature to get the on screen keyboard up except it does not seem to work consistently on my PinePhone. Neither does hitting the minuscule keyboard icon on the bottom right of the screen. At 100% screen magnification it is very hard to see and even harder to hit.
However, I think that part of the problem is that unlike a feature phone where the OS prioritises urgent tasks over non-urgent the delay/non-appearance of the on screen keyboard seems to be also related to how busy the PinePhone is with other tasks. Such as finishing loading the rest of the webpage. Or loading something in the background.
Is there any way to map the volume controls buttons pressing "volume up - volume down" in quick succession to a script so that that the keys can be used to bring up/hide the on screen keyboard?
