new to pine phone and struggling - neverdimed - 11-22-2022
OS on my new pine phone pro explorer: 5.18.0-2-manjaro-arm, pre-installed
i'm new to pine phone and new to manjaro. I'm unsure whether to post the following question here or on the manjaro forum
after starting up the phone it indidatces that there are some updates, when I try to update it says "there was an issue installing this update. please try again later" but i've been trying for a day now (the number of updates remains unchanged as 486). If i click "see technical details" it says "unknown error, unexpected error. I tried to install the Signal app just as a test, and it fails, it says "bad GPG signature found". On the command line i tried to install neofetch but it says "invalid or corrupted package ... errors occurred, no packages were upgraded". So, I haven't succeeded in doing anything. It's a completely new phone, straight out of the box.
i have read the trouble shooting info, and i've watched some videos, but I haven't learned much. Is there somewhere i should be looking for basic troubleshooting info?

thanks for the reply. When i run the first command it says some file is corrupted and asks if i want to delete it, as in this image: https://mega.nz/folder/YkUVFZiJ#oM3K7VTRE-sz3eMbsENhQw Should i delete it?

it's not making progress and i feel there's nothing to do but give up. I ran the commands listed on the manjaro forum, in several different ways (it seemed to work best when i didn't use 'archlinuxarm and manjaroarm'). Sometimes it seems like it's running the updates, but when it gets near the end it asks if i want to delete some corrupted file, and it asks this many many times ie for each individual file, i have never reached the end of these questions and sometimes i have tried answering yes and sometimes no
is there anyone else who ran into these problems? i can't believe it's just me
maybe i want to escape manjaro. I see in this video (at 2:20) he shows the list of all the OS's that can be tried: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=13706. It shows fedora at the top but if i go to the wiki page it's not there: https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_Pro_Software_Releases ? Is one of these known to be more reliable than manjaro because, although i have little clue what i'm talking about, manjaro seems to me to be a headache

Wrong page, that is the one for the Pro. The correct one is https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_Software_Releases for the regular PinePhone.
Simply flash a more up-to-date image to the phone and you should be fine. You can for example try Mobian (mind that it requires Tow-Boot on the regular PinePhone too).

i installed mobian and it's a much better experience than manjaro, I'd highly recommend it over the pre-installed manjaro. Eg, vim is pre-installed, neofetch is easily installed using the usual commands for debian/ubuntu etc. It seems more user intuitive and welcoming
in case it's useful to anyone i'll explain what i did, even though it's covered in the wiki very nicely.
problem is there are lots of good videos about the pinephone and it's not obvious to a noob which are relevant. Eg, this is an excellent video ie very clearly explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66OrpoxsiRw&ab_channel=myLinux, but it's not relevant if you have the pinephone pro. For the pinephone pro explorer purchased after july2022, you don't need to worry about tow boot, jumpdrive ...
-you need a fresh sd card, solely for the purpose
-get image from here: https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_Pro_Software_Releases#Mobian, ie img.gz file from here: https://images.mobian-project.org/pinephonepro/weekly/
-download it, then: gunzip mobian-pinephone-phosh-YYYYMMDD.img.gz [note the mobian wiki says "We recommend downloading pre-built images for installation", not the 'installer']
-as in the video linked above, run 'lsblk' before and after connecting the sd card to the laptop, so you get the dd command below correct
-i used method 3 from: https://wiki.mobian-project.org/doku.php?id=install-linux
-ie, flash with the following command: sudo dd bs=1M if=mobian-pinephone-phosh-YYYYMMDD.img of=/dev/TARGETSTORAGEDEVICE status=progress [this can take a while, hence use ‘progress’]
-run 'sync' [as he explains in the video above, or maybe use ‘conv=fsync’ as per the wiki?]
-then, as it says on the wiki: "To boot to an SD card, place the SD card in your PinePhone Pro and turn it on. The phone will vibrate once. At this point, hold down the volume down button until you feel the device vibrate again then release the button. The LED color should change to blue and your display should remain black for a few seconds."
-you will come to the log in screen and the password is 1234
