Current Situation Mobian Installer (PPPro) - arno_nuehm - 02-27-2022

Hello there,

has someone tested the new version (20220227) of the Mobian Installer for the PinephonePro?

https://images.mobian-project.org/pinephonepro/installer/weekly/

I tried FDE installation from SDcard on eMMC and SDcard and both are not working. Choosing the eMMC, it's aborting with an error message while installing. Choosing installation on the SDcard is going through, but the phone is not booting.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

What is the error message ?

I cannot remember exactly but it wasn't really helpful...

Quick update:
The Mobian Installer image 20220306 is also producing the same error while trying to write the FDE image to the eMMC. It simple says something like "Write failure" as mentioned before.
Sadly, no progress here.

In addition, trying to write the Installer image directly to the eMMC via a non-FDE Mobian installation on SDcard works, but the phone won't boot.

I have a Pine Pro and I flashed Postmarket OS and after I inserted the SD card, the phone does not start now.

Does anyone know what could be going on???

Not certain if this applies here,
but on my new Explorer  ==>  The phone does not show a boot LED indicator when running on Mobian.

It DOES boot,  ---- just no boot indicator light.

The standard 2 second press on the power button, then wait a while to see a screen.

Yes, that's true and I think documented somewhere on the Mobian blog. And yes, I can boot a "normal", non-FDE Mobian image but since I want to use FDE for my PPPro as daily driver, I have to get the Installer running...
I also tried to install FDE Mobian on the SDcard, took the partitions from that card and saved them separately, booted from a non-FDE Mobian and restored the FDE partitions to eMMC. Didn't work either.

Another (unsuccessful) update:

Since there hasn't been a new Mobian Installer version this week, I tried to fool around with Tow-Boot and managed to write the latest release to SPI and boot into USB-Data-Mode via long-pressing the volume-up-button while booting. I then wrote the Mobian Installer (20220306) onto the eMMC and rebooted.
The installer started and I was able to install FDE-Mobian (f2fs) to the eMMC - which is a little success.

But the phone was stuck in a reboot cycle afterwards.

I assume, there still is a problem with initramfs as described here:

"encrypted installs won’t boot due to an initramfs issue"

Hopefully, this can be solved soon.

Cheers!

The next installer build should work. You can get the current one working with some extra steps if you have a serial cable (see this bug report).

Thank you very much. This is good news and one step closer to a daily driver.
