Pinephone Freeze - kmsgli - 02-10-2022

Hey folks, I have been daily driving my pinephone running manjaro phosh since November and overall very usable however every day or two my phone ends up frozen and needs a hard reboot (it never happens when on the charger).

I know its not off because holding power does not turn it on. I need to hold power for a few seconds presumably to shut the phone down then hold power again to start it back up (screen shows nothing). Then everything starts working as it should. I don't know how to trouble shoot this as I have to reset to get access back to the terminal to check systemctl and obviously after reboot nothing in the system journal to indicate whats happening.

Any one else having this issue or have any idea how to trouble shoot it?

Hi, i have the same problem on pinephone pro on all distro.  The lock screen is black and impossible to unlock, only hard reboot helps.  It may be worth tracking down the problem of the system monitor, but have not yet figured out how due to little experience.

At the moment, disabling the automatic suspend mode helped. Power -> Automatic Suspend -> turn off.

I agree its a system suspend issue. I am testing other distros to see if it happens on arch as well but its hard to test other distros as I am daily driving my pinephone.

What other distros have you tried?

It is curious no one else seems to be having this issue, but you are correct turning off suspend keeps it from occurring but battery life gets crushed when you do that. I assume this is an issue with crust?

Hopefully someone can chime in and tell us how to get a log before we have to hard reset to start trouble shooting this.

Unfortunately at the moment on arch, mobian, manjaro the problem with freezing the lock screen remains. It is possible that some pinephone pros have hardware differences that lead to this problem.

I am on a OG pinephone so the fact that pro and original pinephone have the issue leads me to believe its not hardware?

At the moment I cant even get any new OS's to recognize mobile data even with the same settings as my original install. Luckily I am testing with SD cards and can always flip back to eemc which holds my original manjaro install.

I feel like I have had nothing but issues since upgrading the modem firmware like the pine wiki recommends but that process went smooth and had no issues.

I thought you were using a pinephone pro. Then the problem is software. I'll try to figure out what could be causing it. It is unlikely that the modem is causing the problem.

RE: Pinephone Freeze - kmsgli - 03-05-2022

I posted on the crust github and the first response i got was that because the SOC on the Pinephone Pro is different it actually does not have a crust implementation.

So maybe we have the same problem with different causes which seems unlikely?

Look into this thread. There is some probability that your problem roots in this

I am using Manjaro with Phosh and have a problem where the GUI will appear to freeze, well not quite, more like the input is no longer responsive. The GUI then becomes as what I would describe as "jittery", the last touch screen input toggles/untoggles rapidly, if using the onscreen keypad, or if scrolling, it shifts by a pixel or so and jumps back and forth. If I press the side power button to shutoff the screen and try to turn it back on, the backlight turns on but the screen remains black. The only way I've found to bypass this is to plug in a USB-C to USB-A adapter and hook up an external keyboard. This allows me to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a terminal login prompt and use that to 'systemctl restart phosh' which restarts it and brings back the lockscreen.

I'm still trying to find the exact error messages that would be associated with the problem, but I'll see if I can find them.
