new PinePhone... dead pixel? - ~Daniel~ - 06-28-2021

Hello, new PinePhone user here with a quick question after unboxing and turning on my phone.

Do we have any warranty on dead pixels on new PinePhones?

It's just one pixel, but it vertically almost right in the middle, although horizontally shifted to the left of center.... so it's in a really obvious place.  If it was off  to the edge, i wouldn't be as concerned.

From the PineStore's ordering page for the PinePhone:

Quote:DISCLAIMER

A small numbers of stuck or dead pixels (1-3) can be a characteristic of LCD screens. While rare, this should not be considered a defect. If you think that a minor dissatisfaction, such as a dead pixel will prompt you to file a PayPal dispute, DO NOT purchase the PinePhone. When fulfilling your purchase, please bear in mind that we are offering the PinePhone at this price as a community service to PINE64 community. Thank you.

even the most high-end products accept more than 5 pixels as a fault

Pinephone isn't really high-end, and the store does tell us to expect some dead pixels, to keep the cost down. Right now, with beta software that mostly works, most of the time, cheap and available is a pretty big deal.

Thank you for the replies... I'm actually thinking now it may not be a dead pixel... but rather a piece of dust trapped under the "film" screen protector...  does anyone know if there is another phone I can use as a reference that I can use to order a hardened screen protector and case?

Apart from the accessories from Pine64 itself you could use a screen protector designed for the iPhone 11 Pro Max or iPhone XS Pro Max. I don't think there are any fitting cases from other phones out there though, you would have to go with one from the PineStore or 3D print your own (or use a sleeve). There is a list of compatible accessories in the wiki.
