Are we supposed to peel off the thin plastic cover from the touchpad?

I don't remember mine having a protective film on it, but yes, apparently there is one now and can be peeled off...

New PBP owner here too (May 2020) - yes there is a thin transparent plastic cover on the touch pad it can be peeled off. The touch pad will work with or without the plastic film - I believe you could also "skin" the touch pad, if you're in to skinning. There's also a plastic film over the camera that you can peel off too.
