Passive cooling - jl_678 - 07-27-2017

Hi,

I have read in some posts here that the Rock64 can benefit from some passive cooling such as heatsinks. First, I assume that the Rock64 does not come with them. Correct? Second, can someone suggest an appropriate heatsink to purchase? I have pre-ordered a Rock64 and would like to be prepared for its arrival.

I guess it will largely depend on what you want to do with it. I have mostly been playing with android for the time being using a regular large PI heatsink (see attachment) and had no issues what-so-ever. I know however that fire219, Xalius and others have tested pushing the SOC past the base-specs (see ayufans git for more info). For this sort of application you will need something beefier - fire219 even had a fan on his. So, if you want to do media in android or run OMV then a regular Pi heatsink ought to do (perhaps even no heatsink at all); other than that, you may just want something a bit bigger and better.

Yes, they will be fine.

For reference, this is my current setup (moved on from the fan-based one Luke mentioned Wink

). For most use cases it is extremely overkill, but if you plan to have it running full speed and full load 24/7, this is about the worst you may have to plan on. I'm doing it because of overclock testing.

Since we're doing heatsink show and tell... here's mine... (with some bonus cat hair)... Big Grin

That's a 20x20x10mm heatsink which was US$4 for 5 from eBay on the processor, and 9x9x5mm heatsink on the RAM (not that it needs it, but I had it, so why not Wink

) which was US$1.33 for 5 (also from eBay). Running an OpenMediaVault image and idling for most of the day, the CPU heatsink is just warm to touch, memory heatsink is cold, with an ambient temperature of around 23c atm.

I currently use a 14x14x14mm heatsink from Fischer Elektronik, that works quite nicely even for longer lasting CPU loads like building kernels without throttling...

14mm x 14mm heatsink will fit.

apart from the 14x14mm heat sink for CPU what other heat sink is recommended?
