I dd straight from an image file. Haven't tried copying from a mSD card to the eMMC.
OK, thanks for the reply ....
I will try my working sd card --- <dd> ---> eMMC later today
and see how it goes .
If it doesn't fly I should be able to re-format the eMMC
and go to the proverbial plan b ....

All is well that ends well ....
Yesterday I successfully cloned my working
rock64 debian stretch minimal 16 gb sd card
to a 32 gb eMMC module using the dd command
running on a debian buster pc ....
I used two usb3 card readers in a powered
usb3 hub with the target eMMC attached
to a [sd|eMMC ] adapter ....
# dd if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/sde bs=3M conv=notrunc,noerror status=progress
The dd copy took about 13 minutes
and the eMMC booted with no problems ....
This was my first experience with an eMMC module
and I did find it a bit tedious first attaching it
to the [sdc|eMMC] adapter and then inserting it
into its designated slot on the rock64 board
due to its small size ....

Looking around at instructions and documentation to write an image to the eMMC, I have not come across this yet and it's blowing my mind.
eMMC to microUSB adapter ($1.50):

I have an oDroid XU4 with an eMMC module, and this is the adapter I've been using to write an image to it (via dd on OSX). Done the same with my ROCK64, and I think this is something everyone should own if they play with SBC's with eMMC, and I think PINE needs to source these and add them to the store. In my limited testing, worked like a charm with ayufan's Debian Stretch Minimal image (just straight up used dd to write to the eMMC on my hackintosh, and booted straight to it).
Enjoy.
worked for me! have you had any luck with other images?

Thanks for posting this. I just received my 32 gig emmc module from pine.
Came on, to find how to load it, found this thread.
I just ordered it, on Amazon, for $6.53, including shipping. (ships from ODROID).
