Helllo, looking at the new ROCK64 the spi flash chip is no longer included so my question is if it is possible to boot from an ssd connected via USB?
No, it's not. The maskrom can only boot from SPI, SD or eMMC. You can however put an u-boot on a small SD card that then boots the kernel from USB.
can I add an spi flash chip to the board?

You can solder SPI flash on the broad, the PCB footprint still three. Just make sure getting correct part number and such info available at {INE64 wiki site.

Installed the chip. tested that it works but after flashing https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-u-boot/releases/download/2017.09-rockchip-ayufan-1065-g95f6152134/u-boot-flash-spi-rock64.img.xz the board does not boot to spi or usb.  still boots to sd,

am I missing something?
