Hello, dear members,

my name is Costa, I'm living near the Northern Sea, and I've been longing for a mobile phone like the pine 64 for ages.
Would you be so kind as to answer me some questions:

First of all, I assume there are differences concerning the frequences used for phone calls, right?
Does, for example, mean the term 2G mean the same in the US as in Europe?

In other words, could I fail in unpacking the phone, putting in my ALDIDALK SIM-card and phoning a good friend?

As I'm wearing glass-bricks due to my myopy, maybe I didn't look at the right places?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Best wishes,

Costa

Hello,

I use my Alditalk-SIM in the PinePhone with Mobian installed. Aside from currently not being able to make or receive calls over 4G everything is fine. So 2G and 3G are OK at least on my side, hoping this will get fixed in the future.

Greetings from Southern Germany!

Mona
Do you think this is rather an issue with the 4G support of the pinephone or with your mobile provider? Did you try a SIM card from a different provider e. g. from one of the D networks?

To be honest I thought (and hope) that this is only a software issue. At least the OS shows in the top left when it has 4G reception. Unfortunately I have no other SIM to test and I don't know people with a SIM by an other provider that I could or would ask. I have had this SIM in a bunch of Android phones over the last years and have not had this problem until now. I live in a big city in Bavaria, so far 4G has almost always been available to me with decent quality. I'm thinking about testing with another distro latest on the weekend, so I hope I can say more then.
Phone calls over 4G requires VoLTE.
The modem in the PinePhone does support VoLTE;
but it is not enabled in the default setup.
It is however only a small setup change, and I'm sure
the distros will pick that up soon.
Hello,

thank you so much for your answers.

Have a nice day Smile

Today I found out that indeed it might be the mobile provider. I had my SIM in the Xperia 10 with SailfishOS and didn't receive several calls while on 4G, but I got an SMS afterwards over missed calls. The caller could only reach me when I set the connection to 3G. So I guess, you were right.
