RP64 NAS Case, 1 month in - Tim Jones - 07-29-2019

Hi Folks,

I've been experimenting with my NAS case and various drive configurations - 2.5", 3.5", SSD, Hybrid, Combinations - and I've settled on the use of 2 Seagate 12TB Exos drives (https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-256MB-Cache-Enterprise-ST12000NM0007/dp/B0759Q9FXZ/) (and they've released 14TB).  The lower capacity of the 2.5" SSDs didn't balance the lower capacity available.  By striping the two 12TB drives, I have almost 23TB of usable space and over 250MB/sec sustained write performance.

By using a low-profile, 5VDC fan (https://www.amazon.com/Wathai-80mm-10mm-Brushless-Cooling/dp/B07PXSB9W3/) and the standard low-profile RP64 heatsing and fan, I can maintain sub-40C temperatures when running all 6 cores with an artificial sysbench load.  During normal operation I usually see temps in the sub-30C range.

One step that I did take was to tape the SATA cables to keep them clear of the fan blades.

All together, a very good solution for a micro-NAS or media center/server.

Sounds like a really nice NAS build. Impressive.
