I had Armbian running from a MicroSD card for a while and it worked pretty well. I did an "apt dist-upgrade" the other day and now it won't boot into a graphical desktop. And it doesn't come up on the network because I can't ping it.

I installed the latest Armbian onto another MicroSD and it doesn't work either.

So their image for the Pinebook became broken probably in the last few months.

I tried an earlier image from 2023 and did an "apt dist-upgrade" on it and it broke too.

Sucks. That is a nice OS.

Hi guys - I did not touch my pinebook for a long time.
I turned it on today. I am using the 4QOS.
I updated my Wifi password.

Opened the console did sudo apt update which could not find some things. Then sudo apt upgrade which did not a thing.

So I said it sat too long. I got the new Armbian - but the jammy and xfce on an SD card - it booted

How do I get it over to the EMMC?

Thanks

So a while back I managed to break the stock Neon OS when trying to switch from Plasma to something else. There was some change I did to systemctl and it broke it. It will boot to a command prompt. I set it aside and ignored it for a while.

I know Neon has been out of style for a while so I don't know how much effort I should put into fixing it, or should I just put something else on it?

I'm noticing that there isn't a nice list of "mainstream" Linux operating systems for it like there is for the Pinebook Pro, which sucks.

Is there an OS I can install onto it without it being to hacky to get it working? I just want something I can use instead of having to tinker with all the time.

At the moment I'm using NetBSD from a SD card but I have to use a different WiFi adapter.

Thanks!

Hi - I'm running the Armbian "bookworm" cli-only Linux image on my Pinebook, which overall works great, except that text is extremely small on the 1080p LCD display. I've seen other folks with lower-resolution modes for console, but can't figure out how to change it.

I've tried updating disp_mode in /boot/armbianEnv.txt to no avail. No setting I've tried for this has had any effect. I've had slightly more luck adding extraargs=video=1280x720p@60 to this file: the screen goes black during boot, so at least something is getting passed to the kernel, although it seems to be an invalid resolution, and I haven't been able to find a valid one through trial and error.

Does anybody have any ideas? It looks like there are configuration utilities available if you add a desktop environment, but I'd really rather avoid that if possible.

Thank you!

Ok. This has probably been done to death, but I'm trying to get my head around writing a bootable image to the eMMC.

As far as I can tell there are two steps.

1 Download an image and write it to an SD card, and boot the Pinebook from it.
2 After booting, download another image (same or different- but basically the one you want on the eMMC) then use dd to write to of=/dev/mmcblk1

Then power off, remove SD card, power on. The Pinebook should boot from the image that was written in step 2. Is that basically it?

I just got the 1080p image from here:
https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/Pinebook_So...Neon_Image

I flashed it to my SD card using dd, and it boots. I've "set it up" but I realise that that has only affected the SD card image. My guess is I have to dd the image again (as I said) and then reboot and set it up (again).

Thanks.

I still love my Pinebook. It doesn't get as much love as it should since it's slower than my phone, but I've been trying various different operating systems out again to see what I think. However since the Pinebook Pro came out, this model has been treated as legacy. Quite sad since it's still up for sale, but there you go.

I've tried and got the following:

KDE Neon - Nice enough, but all of a sudden stopped updating and working for me. Was support dropped?

Manjaro - Not for me. Works well enough but I'm not a fan of Arch (personal preference) and I found it to be slower than Neon.

Q4OS - Omg, they have an XP theme that's super close! My leading choice at this point and really easy and comfortable to use.

And then I tried Armbian Hirsuite... I love my Pinebook all over again!

Hisuite is based on 21.04, so is surprisingly bleeding-edge for a laptop branch others consider legacy. But powered with XFCE4, it suddenly feels super speedy like it did when it first came out!

To give a familiar look and feel refresh, I installed the Chicago95 theme. The theme dev has worked really hard on this and it definitely shows as it feels like I'm running some kind of Plus! pack on Windows 95!

The only thing I've come across so far is the sound doesn't work? But at this rate I'm usng the Pinebook for productivity not entertainment purposes. It also boots via a UEFI solution so I think it also suffers from the Manjaro charging issue too sadly, so I'm planning on installng aufan ubuntu to the emmc if that becomes a problem (charging while using seems to work well).

Now don't get me wrong, you open an Electron app or Chromium and you can see the system visibly slow down, however I was able to run Visual Studio Code at a bearably slow speed! Impressive considering how chonky of an app VS Code is. And I mean with lots of extensions (I write PHP, Python and Java).

So a big thanks to the Armbian devs for keeping up support for this fantastic little cheap laptop. You guys really made me fall in love with it all over again.

In case anyone is still using their original Pinebook - I pulled mine out of storage couple days ago and installed Debian Sid on it. Everything is working fine so far, except Bluetooth, sound, and deep sleep. The only special thing I had to do is build kernel module separately for WiFi.

I used https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/arm6...rd-images/ to create a Debian installer SD card. Generally installer worked, but letting it do it's own thing hands-off resulted in a system that's not bootable without an SD card. To make it bootable 16MiB free space is required in the beginning of the eMMC (I didn't try using SPI flash). So I partitioned eMMC manually, creating a single ext4 partition that starts at 16MiB mark and takes all of eMMC - I didn't want the hassle with any special partitioning. After that I went through the installation, and in the end installed u-boot-sunxi and ran `u-boot-install-sunxi64 /dev/mmcblk0` (make sure you got the right device number) to install u-boot. One thing to note though is I used u-boot-sunxi from experimental - it seems the version in Unstable is not yet able to boot from ext4 partitions. After that the system boots fine on its own, but doesn't have any WiFi. To get WiFi working I cloned https://github.com/Icenowy/rtl8723cs, installed basic build dependencies (build-essential, linux-headers-arm64), cd to the folder, `make && sudo make install && sudo modprobe 8723cs`. After that I installed the rest of the packages and got a full working system. For KDE Plasma QML not to glitch all the time I had to set QT_XCB_FORCE_SOFTWARE_OPENGL to 1 (I added `QT_XCB_FORCE_SOFTWARE_OPENGL=1` line to /etc/environment).

I'm trying to resurrect my Pinebook and could use a hand. I've got a black screen and cursor (I skip the login?) so I think something is wrong with Plasma.

I'm starting the fix by trying to run updates (I'm on some 18.* release of Ubuntu under the hood) but I'm getting:

`E: The repository 'http://pinebook.kde.org.uk bionic Release' no longer has a Release file.`

It looks like the files I need to point to are here: https://files.kde.org/neon/images/pinebo...eredition/

But when I try to edit my sources.list all I see are the two main Ubuntu ports (bionic and bionic-updates).

Does anyone know where I can find and edit the `http://pinebook.kde.org.uk bionic Release` entry?
