Hi everyone,

I'm currently developing a small Android app called Dormivox.

The Bluetooth feature was mainly designed with the Pine watch in mind – mostly because I like the project.

Current features:
• Live noise level detection
• Alarm to interrupt snoring
• Night statistics and history
• Playback of recorded audio segments
• Optional Bluetooth heart rate input (BLE)

I'm particularly interested in testing Bluetooth heart rate devices with open BLE support (for example PineTime or other BLE HR monitors).

If anyone here would like to try it and give some feedback, that would be very helpful.

You can find the app on the Play Store by searching for: Dormivox

Thanks!

Proposal: an open mp3/media player supporting rockbox

TL;DR:
A small, audio-first handheld released as an open dev platform, derived from PinePhone hardware, designed to be capable of a Rockbox port. Physical controls, great battery life, optional PineBuds + external display support. I would buy one immediately and actively work on the Rockbox port — I’ve been wanting an open hardware Rockbox target like this for a long time.
I wanted to float an idea that feels very aligned with Pine64’s strengths: reuse existing work, document it well, and let the community do interesting things with it.

Concept:
A single-purpose handheld primarily intended as a media player, but released explicitly as an open development platform, not a polished consumer product.

Think: “PinePhone without the phone.”

High-level hardware direction:

Start from the PinePhone hardware lineage (SoC, audio path, power, USB-C)

Remove phone-specific components (modem, cameras, etc.)

Reduce overall size

Add a small, low-power screen

Physical controls (rocker / select / hold)

Headphone jack, microSD

Focus on battery life

Rather than shipping with Rockbox, the goal would be to release a platform deliberately capable of supporting a Rockbox port, alongside other lightweight or experimental software.

Why this seems like a good Pine64 fit:

Rockbox already solves the hard problems for this class of device (audio quality, codecs, physical controls, power efficiency).

Pine64 already excels at open ARM hardware where the value is documentation, reuse, and community ports

There’s growing interest in calm, offline, single-purpose devices (especially for music) that don’t try to compete with phones.

Personal note:
I would immediately buy this device and actively work on the Rockbox port. I’ve been wanting a modern, openly documented hardware platform suitable for Rockbox for some time, and this would be an ideal target.

Natural extensions (without diluting the focus):

PineBuds support for local playback and experimentation

Modest mic + compute for on-device translation / transcription experiments (not positioned as an “AI gadget”)

Optional external display support over USB-C for docking or experimentation, while remaining clearly a handheld media player first

The intent wouldn’t be another general-purpose Linux handheld, but:
an audio-first device released as a documented, hackable platform with a clear “this could run Rockbox” target many people already understand and want.

This feels like one of those rare ideas where most of the hard engineering is already solved, and the main challenge is restraint — choosing what not to include.

Curious what others think

It seems strange to me that this topic is not discussed at all, but are there tariffs to be paid on delivery to a US address? I'm thinking about ordering a Pinecil with accessories, and it's not clear to me at all if the $25 "US Special" delivery fee is everything that will have to be paid, or I'll be hit by some more or less ridiculous tariffs and associated fees (because you don't usually get away with paying just the tariffs, you'll also have to pay the guys taking your money, for taking your money). And the "Shipping Method – Shipping cost covered tariff charge" is really not clear, according to some sources it means "the sender (seller) is responsible for paying all applicable import tariffs, duties, and taxes upfront, before the package reaches the recipient" (DDP), according to others "Shipping is paid; customs fees might not be" (DDU).

Does anyone have a clear answer to this? Has anyone ordered recently and paid or not paid anything extra?

Hello .. just passing along a product idea. It is a product that doesn't exist that I've always in the back of my mind wished for.

I dub it the Pinebank. It is a versatile, open source, extensible, multifunction power bank that uses off-the-shelf replaceable 18650s for serviceability and long term utility.

Maybe low power RISC-V under the hood like the pinecil

Here is a 18650 DIY power bank for some additional inspiration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PBr_jUA4Iw

The hypothetical Pinebank at its core it has 3 primary functions: Power bank, light, speaker

General use cases:
* General purpose power bank
* Bluetooth speaker
* Flashlight
* Work light
* Diffuser cap for lantern operation (power outages, camping, etc)
* Strobe for emergencies, maybe even red light beacon option
* Display function: clock, alarm, weather, radio

Some ideas (some possibly as pluggable module/daughterboard addons):
* AM/FM/NOAA weather
* Connections for solar panels for off grid/emergencies
* SDR/Radio transceiver/antenna for radio geeks/search and rescue
* WWAN
* Lora
* It's a stretch, but it's possible that it could even be used to jumpstart a car or pump up your tires. Like this product https://halo.acgbrands.com/en_US/bolt-ai...phite.html

Since it has a processor, you could use it as a little low powered micro server. Lots of options here.

Perhaps it is not possible to cram in ALL of these features, I'm just airing ideas.

I think something like this would be incredibly useful. Seems like a good fit for Pine.

I have an account on Discord and access several areas there, so I anticipated no problems accessing the Pine64 area. I was mistaken.

I am told that I must complete a few more steps first, but when I click on the button to do so a popup window opens that has a submit button that cannot be pressed and the beginning of a list of rules that cannot be scrolled to see them all.

I had intended to embed or attach the screenshots of this, but either I don't know how to do so or that is unavailable in this forum.

I see no way to contact anyone to correct this problem, so I am posting here in hopes someone can help me get this sorted out.

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Good afternoon everyone,
I'm working on a project that requires six NEMA 17 stepper motors. I can use the standard A4988 or the more powerful DRV8825 driver, but both are 5V devices, while the Teensy 4.0 is a 3.3V device.

Can these drivers be used directly with the Teensy without damaging it?
Do they require a logic level converter?
Are there other compatible 3.3V stepper drivers?

Thanks to the great series of educational tutorials from <dvz_me_placeholder id="0" /> , and following the same reverse engineering journey, I finally managed to boot my PinePhone as far as LCD and drawing to screen last night No Linux, just Zig! and a bit of assembly for boot header. The code is a disaster scene, but buying a 3rd party serial debug cable this week was the final key to fixing the many register value typos I had scattered throughout my code. It is a shame with the tariffs into EU, because I should have also bought an SD card extender, the number of times I have to switch the SD card between tests is crazy!

If anyone else takes this journey, I highly recommend to buy the serial debug cable first!! I dont know how I managed without for so long, flashing LEDs to monitor progress hehe.

Anyway, I just wanted to post here to thank the community, what is left of it but especially thanks to Lupyuen for the huge amount of work he has spent on adding the missing documentation to get these devices working as part of his NuttX work. Well done!
