For a while I was without PineNote tools on the tool bar (refresh, screen mode, ...). Also due to hacking, it wouldnt survive a reboot without SSH fixing...all me on that one.

Anyway with the latest update...Im finding it very useable.
- Liferea for RSS feeds. Read the news, 3 pane window landscape...very functional. Cant remember how I imported them but have 100s of feeds. Update all takes about 5 minutes and then there is more articles than I can consume.
- KOreader with OPDS / Project Gutenberg gets me tons of reading material.
- Xournal++ for notes and drawings

Set the screen mode to BW:1 (or dither) and turn off automatic screen updates. No flashing, smooth scrolling, clear as day.

Still wish:
- X11 was available for more panel options.
- faster writing response in Xournal++
- Some form of Libby / overdrive for checking out books from libraries.

Just wanted to say that it is beoming a daily need now.

Fingers crossed for a PineNote 2 with more cores, more mem, expandable storage.

Greetings!

I am interested in getting a Linux-based tablet for grading. I unfortunately have to use BlackBoard Ultra for grading, or else download student papers (PDF or Word format usually). I don't plan to use the tablet for anything else except reading journal articles and/or books.

Would the PineTab or PineNote be better for this particular use (primarily grading)? My sense is the stylus would be great for making grading faster (as opposed to typing comments, which requires highlighting particular passages using BlackBoard's clunky in-browser system and typing, which I think is slower than my writing), and the PineTab (I think?) isn't compatible with a stylus.

Advice on one or the other would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly!

Hi all,
The Supernote Nomad is a nice bit of hardware with user replaceable battery, memory, case and more.

It also happens to have identical CPU to the PineNote.

Additionally, Supernote has open sourced the U Boot and some other bits.

I unfortunately do not have the skill to attempt to try and flash the new PineNote firmware to it, but it would be very cool to see Debian/Arch running on the Nomad, and I would be willing to contribute toward a bounty to see it happen.

Hi!

I have played around with my pinenote, and all was well. I am uncertain if it was I that messed up, but after a while the on-screen keyboard became unusable because the special keys stopped working.

Here is the problem, which appears in all apps, but let's say in a terminal: all normal keys work (for instance, typing ls). However, backspace does not, Enter does not. The result is that I cannot run any command in the terminal. Ctrl and Alt also seem to be broken

What I suspect is some setting got broken when I added and enabled some other keyboard layouts I use on most computers. I vaguely remember Enter did not work on those layouts, so I reverted back to the preinstalled "en" layout, but that one does not work. But I am not sure. I have been updating it via SSH, hoping for a fix, but only now I got some time aside to look into this.

I would like to recover this, since I have already configured it well. I can operate it via SSH, but I am unsure what to look for. I am mostly a Plasma user, so I am unfamiliar with Gnome applications and settings, but I can manage with gsettings and such.

Thank you!

Hi all, I’m building a logger platform with the Pine A64 board that collects environmental data from multiple ESP32 modules, and I’m deciding whether to use MQTT over local Wi‑Fi or direct USB/UART communication. I recently found this guide on ESP32 MQTT setup and found it an excellent primer for structuring reliable publishing from sensors:
https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2...-mqtt.html
I’ve also been exploring how to implement MQTT on ARM boards using Mosquitto on Armbian, and came across a hands-on ESP32 + MQTT + Node-RED sensor dashboard project. My main concern is latency, long-run stability, and ease of integration via UART. Has anyone built a similar real-time logging system on Pine A64 with multiple ESP32s? Which communication method worked best for you in terms of reliability and scalability?

Or the same thing new for $399.

No?

Or would you like to buy a system where:
- the code is free if you wanna see if you can get black and white 30fps no flicker animation?
- you want to syncthing it with your life
- you want to rsync it with your life
- you want to load all of your information ... pdf's ebooks... over wifi or usb or (pray they add a sd card) ...
- you want to run your email client
- your browser
- your calendar
- your any one of 65k debian packages applications
- you want to solder a SD card port on it (if it doesnt come with one, I will pay $50 for the first person who does...my old remarkable had that hack)
- you want to crack the screen and be able to buy a new screen and make it work (again praying we can open/repair it)
- you want to VNC viewer to become a screen extension of your desktop?
- you want to add a bt keyboard and a bt mouse with a roller and probably (distro is X11) alt scroll wheel to zoom in and out and use this is a yes, I can sit on the beach and earn a living while getting a tan.
- (you see where this is going?)
- basically...you want to do anything with this...you can.
(try that with a competitive product)

So, OP 9+ is worth $150? kb elip is worth $150...what trash and I going to sell to get that extra $100.

You guys rock. I'm challenging myself to become the first order once it hits the store.
Ok, so I downloaded PINENOTE_MAIN-V1R2 - Schematic-20210824.pdf. It looks like it has:
- SD card slot?? lots of mentions about SD switches and stuff. Really hoping that's there and that the speed is decent.
- USB 3.0 could be faster but isnt a slouch.
- and I saw on that schmatic...JTAG ports!!!!...I pray they are document which may prevent me from bricking another device when I flash it wrong! Such a valuable feature if it's there. A $25 JTAG "resurrection spell"!

I have a good understanding of computer technology but in recent years find myself moving towards near complete digital detox, I think there is far too much waved connection.

I run a Mudita Pure e-ink dumb phone which works as a modem and a rooted & degoogled Onyx Boox Note Air 2 Plus for everything else, at least that is the idea. The privatized Boox tablet firmware (controversial because of GPL) has proved a nuisance and thus I find myself using the linux laptop I intend to sell.

I like a rough, physical, healthy lifestyle, so to compliment it, I would like a rugged / metal Pinenote to work in tandem with a simple phone. Also, my opinion is that a colour e-ink display option would allow for a better multi-purpose device, I have had trouble reading backroad / topographic map-books in grayscale, and colour is helpful for the odd online purchase as well.

Simple e-ink devices seem to me a better path or at least compromise in the balance of things.

So, my take:
Mostly working outdoor with a Laptop to read out sensor data over RS232 is painful if the sun is shining.... Being able to run a terminal program on PineNote and read the output on the e-ink display would be great....

Thanks for any information on this topic.

I own a PinePhone. It is basically a toy, I was happy to see a new phone with a removable battery, unlockable, runs Linux, SD card, etc. And the price is OK, not great but OK. It's fun to play around with, and it's nice to know it will receive new distros and features for years to come, and I never have to worry about it being bricked by a dead battery. The SD card gives so much flexibility to installing OSs and moving data around.

I'm in the market for an E-Reader, so I was excited to see the PineNote listed. My excitement has dropped to 0 after seeing the specs and price. Non-removable battery? No SD card? Who is your target audience?? No Linux enthusiast wants a throwaway device that's locked to internal memory only. $400? That is totally uncompetitive with existing Android E-Readers. And without removable battery and SD card the PineNote has nothing that sets it apart.

The stated reason why SD cards cannot be included is that the case does not allow it. So use a different case? Do you really think your customers care more about a flashy metal "premium" (your words) case than having a device that lasts more than a year or two and has an SD card? I'm disappointed that Pine would even put their brand on a device like this.

I would love to get an e-book reader that runs GNU/Linux, but I feel like $400 for this type of device is too expensive. Since I would only use it to read books, I have no need for a quad core CPU or powerful graphics. Even original PinePhone's hardware should be good enough for this task (apps would load slowly, but that's fine for reading books) and it would be much easier to pay $200 for example. Making the screen smaller might also be fine.
