I searched for a while before finding this information, so I thought I'd post it for others incase they're looking for the same information.

Maemo Leste uses the Hildon menu, to get an application shortcut to show up in the menu you need to move it to

Code:

cd /usr/share/applications/hildon/

I figured this out because I added bluetooth manager and was trying to get the bluetooth manager into the start menu, and I was able to with this command:

Code:

cd /usr/share/applications/

Code:

cp blueman-manager.desktop hildon/

Code:

cp blueman-adapters.desktop hildon/

Bluetooth manager showed up, but the adapters do not. Not sure exactly why, but I didn't actually need the blueman-adapters link. I guess I'll find out more when I start adding more apps

I put Maemo Leste on the sd card, ran it and it really works on the pinephone. The images are from an older system where QtWebBrowser could not be installed but Chromium worked. When typing on the virtual keyboard, the font didn't show up in Chromium, but it could be highlighted, copied, and pasted.

Phone calls even work, SMS can be sent and received and will appear in conversations. Connection via the operator's mobile data also works, but the APN context must be set after starting the system for the first time. I don't have a physical pinephone keyboard, so I had to turn off PP and modify the sd card in PC.
It is still not comfortable to use, but a significant improvement can be seen.
There's a little more to it then this (i.e. keyboard, microSD card, trouble I had with Manjaro, many times I reformatted the microSD card, and other images I flashed to it, it's the discontinued$149 2GB/16GB PinePhone ), but there didn't seem to be an initial problem with the boot, only a problem the second time I'd boot and not only with Maemo-Leste, though that was the first one I tried.

Hello? Anyone following this software's forum?

I read something that suggested initramfs isn't used during maemo-lest startup. Does that sound right to anyone?
Also, would it make sense that a maemo-leste image would create a write protected sector on a microSD card during boot process?
These both seem like incorrect statements, but...whatdoIknow (enough to ask foolish questions).

Did you know Maemo Leste is Debian for your PinePhone? For real! It is Devuan with the arm64 architecture running on stretch. They will soon be upgrading to buster and supporting both Debian and Devuan simultaneously. They use automation in their package maintenance with jenkins (similar to debian's buildd) to ease porting and updates. Porting packages to Maemo Leste is basically a simple matter of porting to arm64 version of Debian, which benefits both projects. So you will pretty much have all the benefits of the Debian repository, especially as the project matures. In addition to the main repositories, there is a community repository (so, like AUR).

There have been a few parallel attempts to port Debian to the ARM architecture, Maemo being the longest running. Currently, the project for porting Debian to arm and arm64 is unmaintained. You might be wondering, why hasn't this been done sooner? Simply put, everyone has been relying on the Android kernel, so benefits are not making it back to Linux. However, there are a few more projects for Debian on ARM (mainly ARM64) including PureOS, Dragonbox Pyra, Armbian, and Debian + phosh, so that's about to change rapidly.
