Trying to understand power part of circuit....

Hi,
Just to let you know I am not an electrical engineer but do dabble in electronics and there is no better place to learn circuits and how they work than to look at other people designs.
With that in mind I am trying to understand why the Pinetime watch has 2 voltage regulators...the ME6206 which takes battery voltage and regulates to 3.3V and the SGM2036-3.3 which also does the same?  The output for each is Vcc and Vdd and some components take Vcc and others Vdd.
I think it might have something to do with with the P24 power control and saving power and disabling some components when not in use, but that part of circuit eludes me also.

Very interesting question!

I've also been a bit puzzled by all the NC components and what benefit the P24 circuit would bring it it had been populated. Come to think of it, given the way so many footprints were included on the silkscreen I'm also a little curious why I cannot find the gaps for the unpopulated components.

On other words, I can't really answer but am definitely interested!

I tried to understand the schematic.

It looks like VDD is only powering :
- the Accelerometer
- the Heart Rate sensor

That would then make sense to be able to completely take them out. 
Accelerometer is rated 13 μA when off.
Heart Rate sensor max 0.1uA when sleeping.

That is still something useful if we want to get extra long battery life.


But I don't know how the Mofset is working (electrically speaking). What happens when P24 goes HIGH or LOW ?

Your 'image' shows as a huge blob of text here. It looks to me like P24 switching Q8 (or having R23 as 0R for that matter) only makes sense if you leave U12 unpopulated. Contingency planning for parts shortage, or different models from different population of the same board perhaps? Or I'm just missing something! I haven't checked to see which parts are actually populated on the PineTime - R22 and Q8 are shown as NC.

Aaaaah make sense yes. I looked in mine, there is a 6-pin pad that is empty under the LCD connector. Could this one be the U12 not populated then ?
