passwd / can't log in
#1
This is a noob mistake, but I just received my Pinebook Pro and the first thing I did was use `passwd` to change both my user password and the root password. Then I rebooted my machine and now I can't login at all using the new passwords nor the default passwords.

I see now there is a different method in the online doc to change the default user password, but I'm a bit stuck. Is there something I can do or do I just need to re-image and start over?

You should be able to make a bootable sd card and boot into it. The sd card will likely auto mount the internal drive, or you can find it with sudo fdisk -l and mount it.
Then as root, you can use the chroot command to set the new root to the mounted drive and use passwd to make the change.

Google "linux change root password chroot" and you will get plenty of detailed info on how to do it.

If you make the sd card a different distro (I'm using "Bionic Mate Community Build Image [microSD Boot] by ayufan") you will have the second distribution to play with as well. Note that Ubuntu uses rock64 instead of rock as the default user & password. It also defaults to not allowing root to log in so you will have to use "sudo su" or sudo -i" in a terminal to get root.

What you could also try is, changing to a terminal (I'm guessing you end up on the login) with CTRL + ALT + F3 or another F-Key except F7.
and try to login as root from there using the old, new and default passwords.

Maybe you just have a screwed up keymap, type your password as you normally do in the user field or attach a usb-keyboard and try again. This happened to me a few times actually. :/
Hello FBI,
I am not an actual hacker.

Thanks @mainer , that got me going again AND now I know how to experiment with different distros. Thanks so much!

For anyone else who messes up like me, here's the docs I found to fully do what mainer suggested:
1) Choose a distro: https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/Pinebo...an_Desktop
2) Prepping the image and SD Card for booting: https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/NOOB
3) Put the SD card in the Pinebook and reboot. Noob note: if you use the same distro... it will look the same! Try logging in.
4) Follow the chroot instructions. As mainer said, the drive was already mounted. Mine was at "/media/rock/<some GUID>: http://www.microhowto.info/howto/reset_a...ution.html
5) Remove the SD and reboot
6) Login
7) Profit!

This isn't a solution, but a similar problem. I've been waiting days and seemingly nobody can answer my question. I just got the new PmOS phone and I'm trying to root, but sudo doesn't recognize my password. Has anyone else been through this? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Greetings,

You might have better luck posing the question in the Pinephone forums:  https://forum.pine64.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=120
